Kindness Matters
Our pilot program addresses the needs of homeless and at-risk high school students in partnership with school administrators and social workers at First Colonial High School. We are VB is committed to implementing programs which meet the immediate needs of these students and lay the groundwork for consistent, long-term support programs which foster self-esteem, dignity and their ability to meet their full potential as students and citizens. Three basic areas of need have arisen from our meetings with stakeholders – nutritional needs both in and out of school; basic out of school needs to foster personal success such as clothing, transportation, safe/quality environment to study and socialize; and the unique needs of graduating seniors.
Our near-term deliverables include a food, toiletries and basic needs “pantry” for students to access basic daily items they need in and out of school, to include fresh fruits, vegetables and refrigerated foods – often not available with any regularity to this student population. We have additionally identified five graduating, homeless seniors to whom we will provide a classic graduating senior experience, to include senior portrait, yearbook, cap and gown, tickets to prom and prom wear. We will additionally work with school administrators to assist these students with post-graduation internships and employment opportunities. Our long-term goal is to establish a sustainable year-round program at First Colonial High School, and to expand similar, customized programs to other schools in Virginia Beach.
You have an incredible opportunity to be a hero for at-risk high school students right in your own backyard. It is my hope you will consider a cash donation to We are VB so we may affect real change in our community. The seeds of kindness we sow today, will lead to a better Virginia Beach tomorrow. 100% of all cash donations will support at-risk and homeless students.
