I was a solid B student throughout high school and college. I excelled in math and science, which overshadowed my difficulties in spelling, writing, pronunciation of words, and reading comprehension. Even on standardized tests, such as the GRE, I scored in the zero percentile, even after taking a GRE prep class.

It wasn't until my late thirties that I was correctly diagnosed with dyslexia, and my optometrist explained to me that my eyes don't move as a single unit, which causes blurred vision when reading or looking at an Excel spreadsheet. To help mitigate this problem, I attended night classes twice a week at Neuhaus Education Center for three months. During this three-month period, I drove 1.5 hours from my job to downtown Houston, followed by a 45-minute commute to my house. On weekends, I had private tutoring lessons with other dyslexic adults on Sundays for over six months to relearn the English language from the beginning. I relearned how to properly read, pronounce vowels and consonants, understand basic grammar, sentence structure, and reading strategies to help me function in my professional career. Neuhaus provided me with a set of skills to excel in my professional career.

Therefore, I would like to give back to an organization that has given me so much by fundraising for the Margaret H. Ley Adult Literacy Program at Neuhaus Education Center (www.neuhaus.org). This adult literacy program focuses on providing adult learners with a skill set to improve their reading, writing, and word pronunciation.

My goal is to raise $4,000 for Neuhaus Education Center. Dyslexia is a specific, neurobiological learning disability that can impact a child's ability to read and write for a lifetime. While there is no cure, there are fantastic organizations that use research-based methods to help students overcome these challenges. Neuhaus Education Center is one such non-profit organization that is at the forefront of helping students with dyslexia.

We are organizing our 3rd annual run to help raise scholarship money for students in the Houston area to receive dyslexia therapy with trained reading specialists. It costs approximately $5,700 for one dyslexic child to receive 1-on-1 therapy for an entire year. Our goal is to raise enough money to fund therapy for at least 2 children in need for a year. Please help us reach our goal of raising $11,400 for 2 children to be given the gift of literacy!
