On January 7th, 2025, I received a call from my aunt that my mom needed an ambulance, NOW. She had made the call for herself and was waiting for EMS when I got in touch with her.
She was weak, to the point she couldn’t get off the floor on her own anymore. She had been sick for a bit; two separate doctors claimed she had pneumonia in the weeks leading up.
She was taken to Staunton hospital. After a few minutes of getting her into the ER and tests ran, etc., I was able to go back with her. When I saw her, my first thoughts were that I was going to have to make “that” phone call to my brothers. She was in very bad condition.
After further testing, they discovered she was COVID positive. At this point, COVID wrapped with pneumonia, they were sending her somewhere else. A bed opened up at Springfield Memorial that night, and she was on her way! For the next 7 days, it was test after test, doctors at all hours, countless needle sticks, decent food, A LOT of DoorDash… and a plan to figure out what was wrong.
As the days went on, they started weeding everything out, and it began to get more and more clear what was happening…
Wegener's was back…
She had been in remission since 2016. It came back with a vengeance and teamed up with COVID to attempt to take her. Fortunately for us, she had some great doctors and one hell of a will to continue living for her babies! She was started on medicines and steroids from day 2. Everything was improving daily, except her ANCA levels. All the signs were there. Without a kidney biopsy, they wouldn’t be able to say 100%…
She spent about half a day weighing everything out as it isn’t a stick-and-go procedure; it carried some heavy risks. After many conversations with the boys and me, her siblings, her daughters, and Dad, she was on board with it.
Results showed what we had feared. We began the planning of doctor’s appointments, tests, and everything that goes along with these types of life-changing diagnoses. She was ready! I could see the fear, but she was ready!
Let’s fast forward to April…
REMISSION!!!!
That’s where we are today!!! Now with that being said, let’s get into why I’m writing all of this…
Starting June 10th, I’ll be biking 10 miles a day for 7 days — a total of 70 miles — in honor of my mom, Laura Wright, who turns 70 on June 17th.
This ride is more than just a number — it’s a way to celebrate her strength and resilience while raising awareness for Wegener's Disease or Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis.
I’m raising funds for the Vasculitis Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by these rare and challenging diseases. Every dollar helps support research, education, and patient care.
As lucky #7 holds true in her eyes, I ask that if you can, donate $7!
$7 for 70 miles on her 70th birthday on the 17th!
You can keep track of my daily progress on my FB page. I will be recording my rides and have a video posted the following week of the rides!
All donations go directly to the Vasculitis Foundation through GoFundMe. If you’re able to support this cause, I’d be incredibly grateful. And if not, a share or word of encouragement means the world, too.
Let’s ride for awareness. Let’s ride for Nana.
