Upward Bound Camp for Persons with Special Needs, Inc.

On October 10th, Shelby's papa, Harold Burks, joined his beautiful wife in Heaven.  The last few years were filled with the pain of recovering from a broken back, losing his beloved wife and then breaking his shoulder.  The one thing that kept his spirits up was sharing historical facts with his fellow San Jose Memories friends.  

The picture of Harold is with his granddaughter Shelby at Camp Upward Bound Gates, which is an amazing camp for people with special needs.  Shelby looks forward to going to camp every summer to have the opportunity to spread her wings, make friends and feel like an independent adult.  (Oh, and the SMORES are pretty good too.)

In lieu of flowers, we are asking for donations to help rebuild Camp Upward Bound which was destroyed by a recent forest fire.  Camp Board members all voted to rebuild since this is such a valuable resource for so many amazing people with special needs. All that is left  of the original Gates School location is 2 brick chimneys.  Bricks from the chimneys will be used to  create a memorial flower garden named, Papa and Grammy's Garden.  This holds special meaning since Shelby's papa was a gifted brick mason in San Jose, California.  Please help us not only bring this garden to life but help Camp Upward Bound rebuild.  Shelby and the hundreds of campers and staff who are heartbroken and eager to return to a new and improved Camp Upward Bound Gates will be forever grateful.
