Want to join me in making a difference? (Do you want to make a real difference in the lives of injured, stray dogs from the Native American reservations? Underdog Animal Rescue and Rehab is the only nonprofit organization in Utah working exclusively to improve the lives of the reported 500,000 stays that roam the Four Corners region. You're super now will benefit stay dogs in need of medical attention). I'm raising money to benefit Underdog Animal Rescue & Rehab, and any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to us.
In the past several months, Underdog has taken in over 10 special needs medical cases from the Navajo Reservation area. Underdog doesn't only take in already adoptable dogs, but we serve as an emergency resource for sick, injured, or special needs dogs!
In the past several months alone, we have regularly taken in dogs kicked by horses, dogs hit by cars, dogs suffering from illness, and severely malnourished animals. When we see these cases, we spare no cost in getting them medical care and rehabilitating them to the absolute best of our ability. Our medical bills from this summer have surmounted $15,000, which includes blood work, medicine, x-rays, surgeries, and more.
Here are some of the dogs we have helped in the past few months, some of which are currently available for adoption through our website:
Rudolpho (Rudy)
On August 20th, we received a call from an elderly gentleman about a dog dumped by the road on the Rez. On August 21st, the same man called us to say that the dog had been hit by a car. After he crawled underneath a building to retrieve our sweet Rudy, one of our staff members rushed to pick him up. We took him straight to the vet, where it was determined that Rudy had several broken vertebrae, a broken pelvis, and a mangled tail, which resulted in the loss of use of his back legs and fecal/urinary incontinence. Rudy was also covered in ticks, had broken teeth, and had maggots around his anus. His prognosis was very poor.
However, after nearly two weeks at Mill Creek Animal Hospital and having his tail amputated, Rudy started to show signs of back leg movement and the ability to hold his feces/urine! His prognosis improved during his stay, and he was released from the hospital into the care of one of our fosters. During his time in foster, we learned a lot about this sweet boy and his personality.
There is something special about Rudy, with his bright brown soulful eyes and his loving vibe towards humans and pups. He has been an inspiration to everyone as he makes great strides in healing and being stoic throughout his rehabilitation. He can get around as he pleases now and goes for short walks on a leash, but he will need more rehab time as he gets his strength back. He is an affectionate companion who will follow you everywhere with sincere curiosity in his newfound domestic life. He enjoys spinning with excitement, cozy naps on fuzzy blankets and playing gently with other dogs- he would be a great addition to your pack! He has the cutest little ears and very short hair, which means he’s not a fan of the cold. He is well-mannered, extremely smart and able to use a dog door. He enjoys hikes and car rides and travels well. Now, he's available for adoption and waiting patiently for his new forever family! Without Underdog's care and faith in him, Rudy would probably not be with us today.

Ava
In October, a community member reached out for help with the dogs that had accumulated on their property. A few of them had been sick, and we weren’t sure what was wrong with them. One of our staff members was on her way to a spay and neuter clinic and stopped to pick up the sickly dogs on her way there. When she saw Ava, she didn’t know if she’d make it through the 3-hour drive. Her belly was huge and full of mystery fluid. She had extreme diarrhea in the car and was incredibly lethargic. Amazingly, she made it to the clinic and was rushed in to be examined by the vet. Her condition was not looking good - her temp was 104.7, and she was extremely dehydrated. She was immediately started on IV fluids and medication. Ava was in such rough shape that some folks thought it would be best for her to be peacefully put to sleep. However, we had hope that she would pull through. The amazing vet treating her agreed. There was just something about Ava, and we knew that we had to give her a chance. Despite her severe condition and inability to lift her head out of weakness, she always wagged her tail when the team came in to see her. After she made it through the first night, we felt a lot better about her odds. She was still not out of the woods but was doing better. She was eating and drinking water on her own but was still not moving much. She was stabilized and well-watched over the weekend. As soon as possible, she was transported back to our regular vet in Moab, Utah. After testing and bloodwork, it was discovered she had heartworm disease and potential heart failure. Ava went to a foster home to continue her treatments in a cozy environment. Ava has turned into a completely different dog in less than two weeks with proper nutrition, medication, and lots of love. Her belly is almost back to normal, she has so much more energy, and she loves absolutely everyone. We are SO happy we were able to give this sweet girl a chance. She will need continuous treatment to address her medical issues, but we’ll never give up on her.
These are only two of the numerous dogs we've helped in the past few months. Please donate to help us recoup the cost of their care and give more pups in need the medical care they deserve!
