Support Lucille's Fight Against Neglect
Lucille was found at a low-end auction being sold as a broodmare. She was tied up facing the opposite direction as all the other horses so no one would notice her horrific eye. I found her standing calmly tied with her face in the dark being bitten repeatedly by the stallions in the pens next to her. She was bitten so much and so hard that she had smashed her injured eye into a nearby gate, causing the wound to rip open and bleed all over her face. I knew instantly she was coming home with me. They led this bleeding little mare around the pen and announced "her eye is busted but that don't matter, she can still make good babies for you".
The previous owner met me at her pen. She shared a lengthy story about how one day her eye was injured and she didn't know how it happened. She didn't have money to fix her eye and so for the last two months, Lucille's eye had been getting more infected with each day. She had tried to get her pregnant but it didn't work so she brought her to the sale to get her a different home. I got her home and immediately seen by a vet. This is where the story gets much more sinister.
The vet confirmed this was no injury, but this was severely neglected cancer. Lucille's eye had already been surgically removed and the cancer had grown back with a vengeance and left to fester for months. She had picked up a secondary bacterial infection inside the mass that caused it to bleed, pus, and ooze. The worst part is she was bred over and over again in this condition until her body stopped taking and she began to lose weight. Lucille deserves justice and love in a way she's never received before. She is currently on antibiotics for the infection and enjoying her new home with a friend as she settles in. While she recovers, we have much more planning to do.
We have up-to-date x-rays showing that the cancer has thankfully not eaten away at her bones. She will going to a top notch medical facility to remove as much of the cancer as possible. We have high hopes that she will live a comfortable pain-free life with the proper treatments. Her treatment includes a full sedation and debridement and attempting to fully clear the socket of all cancer cells. This will allow Lucille to live out her days comfortable and pain free for as long as possible. To allow her to be a horse again, instead of a breeding factory. We want to give Lucille her life back. Will you help us accomplish that?
