$30 for 30: New Big Cat Laws & Freedom Expansion
In December 2022, the Big Cat Public Safety Act was passed by the Senate and will make it illegal to privately own and breed big cats in the United States. It will also make it illegal to interact with them in pay-to-play schemes, often involving cubs. Before the law was passed, there was a Big Cat Crisis in the United States where people were breeding big cats for profit. This occurred in two ways: 1) breeding them to sell to private owners and to create unnatural exotic variations at the cost of genetic disorders, and 2) creating a puppy-mill model for big cats, pumping out cubs to profit from pay-to-play interactions.
Now that it is illegal, these businesses will fail, and many, many big cats will need to be immediately rescued out of situations of abuse and neglect. For Turpentine Creek, 2022 marks 30 years of rescuing big cats from the exotic pet trade. We are among the most highly decorated Big Cat Sanctuaries in the world, accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, a founding member of the Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance, trusted to work with Government Officials, and recently featured on This is Life with Lisa Ling in an episode titled "Tiger Queens ".
Most sanctuaries around the US are now at capacity, and we have the space in our Freedom Field to immediately begin building in preparation for the massive influx of big cats that will need to be rescued in response to the new law.
In honor of this milestone and 30 years of rescue, we are launching our $30 for 30 campaign, which can be donated in increments of $30, $300, $3000, and $30,000 to support the construction of new habitats.
Please send in your charitable, tax-deductible donations by 12/31 for your 2022 tax returns.
Thank you all for your support and for helping to change the lives of big cats from rescue to refuge.
