Let’s talk about Pride in 2025
As intelligent, logical folks we know that sometimes two steps forward equals a step back. It’s not ideal, but it’s still stepping forward. That’s the dance we do.
In philosophy, it’s MLK with the pendulum swinging for history…. The great, beautiful and hard-fought arc. It’s also a box step dance. Step forward, step forward at an angle, bring it together and step back. That’s the dance.
That’s progress when you boil it down: a dance of power. Whether it’s flat footing, a barn dance, or giving the best Ballroom Hunty (it’s 10s across the board)…All of us are dancing.
Our great dance, not only as queer folks, not only as Appalachians, but as Americans, is threatened now. We don’t have to show you the receipts. You know this. So here is where we are:
TriPride has always, and will always, be of our people, by our people. As we’ve grown, we’ve been able to prove ourselves to get our amazing vendors, our awesome corporate sponsorships and our grants. Our community and this organization did its work, and we succeeded.
But today is a different day. This year, even more so than our first year, TriPride survives with y’all making it so. Period.
Businesses are hurting and sometimes they have to pull back. That’s bitter to taste. We get it... That said, some are pushing back as they can. It’s a very, very complex space.
So, here’s the ask: please give what you can and please show up. Pride is about roots. Pride is about rainbows showing hope and diversity. Pride is about being resilient. Pride is a patchwork of experiences and humans. But Pride is hollow without its folks.
Let us not be hollow and shallow. Let us show our roots as deep as our mountains. Let’s show hope and the rainbow of our vast community’s diversity. Let’s show our resilience, defiantly and proudly.
Let’s show up and do the work worth doing, together.
