Tilton Library Expansion Project
Since 1917, the Tilton Library has been the soul of the town of Deerfield, Massachusetts. The little brick building endowed by local grocer Chauncey Tilton held classic literature, local history, essential references, and the latest periodicals. Generations of kids learned there, generations of adults went there to stay informed.
But buildings age just as readers do. Desperate efforts to keep the Tilton Library open got more and more costly. Finally in 2017 the Library applied for a state grant to cover half the cost of a full remodel and expansion. Finally the Library would have modern climate control, more shelf space, meeting rooms, an elevator to let everyone reach all
parts of the building, and — crucially — more than one bathroom!
Then the Coronavirus pandemic struck, and building costs soared. The price of the Library expansion exploded from eight million to more than twelve. The Town of Deerfield is juggling other projects, all of which suddenly cost more than expected, and can't cover the shortfall. The Library needs to raise two million dollars from donors to
finish the job.
We've managed to raise 1.3 million of that sum, but we still need more than 600 thousand dollars to meet our goal. Libraries are an essential part of every community — please help keep ours going for another century!
