Throw Away Dogs Project

If you have ever had a dog you understand the larger than life greeting you get when you arrive home, their odd but silly behavior that makes you late for everything and the countless hours of conversation you have with them with no actual response so on September 17, 2016 when we had to say good bye to our sweet 9yr old Beagle Dolce, because of kidney failure, we knew our lives would be forever changed but we never knew to this extent

How fate works….

My husband Andrew and I fall right into that dog lover category so losing our precious family member was a crushing blow to us and our other dog Cash.  During our time of grief not too far away the Seaside Marathon was kicking off, late by some sort of fate because later on we would learn there was a spoiled terror attack.  In the coming hours similar scenes would surface in the Chelsea Area of NY and in Elizabeth, NJ.  The events of September 17th set into motion our relationship with Carol and the Throw Away Dogs Project.

The Throw Away Dogs Project is a Non Profit organization who fosters, rehabilitates, and rehomes unwanted K9s and dogs who show a strong drive for working.  After going through the training process should a dog be fit for duty they are then donated to communities in need to further their training with a forever handler. The cost alone for a department to take on this expense from the beginning is nearly $10,000. These are the dogs protecting their communities from more than terror attacks; they are sweeping drugs and criminals off the street while also lending a friendly face to their communities and partnership to their handlers.

At first one would think the set of dogs that fall into this category could not be huge but we were wrong; daily Carol and her volunteers have to turn away candidates because of space, resources, and other associated costs with fostering and training these dogs.

Where we come in….

Sometime between our first and second date Andrew mentioned he had an interest in becoming a K9 officer, not knowing what that entailed I went along with his passion which now has become our reality almost 7 years later. Through the need of an explosive K9 and Andrews passion for the job he was granted the position of K9 officer in Bradley Beach, NJ. Less than 20 miles from the failed terror attack in Seaside.

Where does one begin even getting a K9, fortunately for us Andrew has had the guidance of his friend, coworker, and fellow K9 Officer Bill. Through Bill’s dedication and networking he introduced us to Carol at the Throw Away Dogs Project.

In April 2016 Carol began fostering Sting a 3 year old Belgium Malinois with an unknown past, a drive for work, and a goofy personality.  With previous training in explosives and  Carol’s time, training, and love she was able to work through Sting’s triggers with the hope of being able to donate him to a department in need. In November we were fortunate that Carol picked us to be Sting’s new family. During Sting’s time with Carol she was approached to be a part of a new show with Caesar Milan; Dog Nation on Nat Geo Wild.  After the initial filming in Pennsylvania Sting was given the opportunity to train with Caesar in California which was filmed for the upcoming season.

Currently there are 3 in the training process with Throw Away Dogs and many more in need of rehabilitation. In the last 2 years 15 dogs have been placed with first responders all over the United States. There are 7 other dogs who found their forever home outside of emergency services. 

At Throw Away Dogs their ultimate goal is to one day build the Throw Away Dogs Ranch to be able to rehabilitate and train as many dogs as they can.  The drive and dedication from Carol and her volunteers is unlike any other. Day in and day out they give their all to these special dogs. Not only do they provide the love of a pet but they are able to protect and serve our local communities

Please join us for a fundraiser to benefit The Throw Away Dogs Project and their efforts of rehabilitating and rehoming service dogs.

We will also be premiering Sting’s Episode of Dog Nation with Caesar Milan on Nat Geo Wild

There will be music, prizes, and a spirits sampling as well
