Thoreau Elementary Playground
Hello Friends and Neighbors-
We can't say enough amazing things about Thoreau Elementary school and the teachers, staff and students who spend their days there. Unfortunately, the current playground is more of parking lot than a play space and leads to frequent falls and injuries for the kiddos that run, jump and play there. We are looking to refinish the current space with new soccer goals, a new basketball hoops, improved landscaping and more green space. Additionally, the remaining concrete would be regraded to better allow for drainage and leveled out to minimize falls.
After a recent meeting with the school district we are thrilled to report that they have offered to pay for half of the re-surfacing of the playground, which is a $10,000 unexpected contribution, and the work can be done THIS SUMMER!
As a result, the PTO Board is recommending that the decision whether to have a grassy field or not be made during the next school year - it comes with a $30,000 price tag.
The smaller, 1,800 square foot grass space will be put in this summer, and so will some other cool things such a basketball hoop and some landscaping, yet to be completely decided.
The overall goal of the playground renovation was to improve the safety for our children, and now we can do that a full year ahead of schedule in this first phase.
