The Mitchell Chang Foundation, Pirate Playground
Let Us Continue Mitchell's Story

In Loving Memory of Mitchell Chang, The Mitchell Chang Foundation (TMCF) was created to build a state of the art, pirate themed, destination playground, for all families to enjoy. We're asking you, our San Antonio community friends, to help make this dream a reality by donating to this wonderful cause that will have a permanent place in our great city.

Mitchell's Story
Mitchell was a carefree, happy-go-lucky three-year-old babe whose life ended far too soon when he drowned at Love to Swim School. Before this tragedy, Mitchell was best described as a determined little boy which is fitting since his Chinese name, Pei-Heng means “to be persistent.” He was persistent in all his endeavors: sharing, laughing, pursuing his dreams of being a pirate, and playing with swords and sword paraphernalia.
Mitchell exuded happiness and love. His preschool teacher at The Buckner Fanning School at Mission Springs described Mitchell as having a servant’s heart. He gave hugs freely, loved to help others, and showed great compassion not often seen at such a young age. It was his willingness to continuously help his classmates and friends that endeared Mitchell to all who knew him. Despite his short life, Mitchell had a profound impact on his community.

A Foundation to Continue His Good Story
TMCF exists to honor Mitchell’s exuberant and compassionate spirit by continuing his good story. It is the foundation’s wish to encourage children to play joyfully, to bring families together, and strengthen the community by building inspiring and safety-conscious playgrounds.

Within a year of formation, TMCF has already completed one playground and is in the beginning stages of it's second project, Mitchell's Landing at Classen-Steubing Ranch Park in San Antonio. TMCF is working with The City of San Antonio to provide the community a playground that will inspire play for all families. Mitchell's Landing will be a pirate themed playground that will encourage children's imaginations as they tackle adventures on the high seas! It will be a playground where Mitchell's fun and enthusiastic spirit will live on. It will be a place for all families to live their good stories through the creation of lifelong memories.

Mitchell loved to bring others into play with him just as much as he loved to help everyone around him. Every moment of his life was a party and everyone was always invited! It is through this, TMCF is inspired to make Mitchell's Landing a place for all families to play, regardless of physical or mental abilities. A playground full of love, fun, and inspiration. A playground like no other and is needed for our wonderful community.

Help us Be the Good Story
In order to provide the high quality, safety conscious, commercial playgrounds San Antonio children deserve, the Mitchell Chang Foundation wants to raise $250,000. This money will go towards making Mitchell's Landing the City of San Antonio's first public inclusive playground!
Building high quality, safety conscious, commercial playgrounds is a costly endeavor. (Did you know that an inclusive merry-go-round costs $12,000, 4x the cost of a standard merry-go-round?). In fact, a playground’s most expensive, but essential, component is the safety ground cover that consists of poured-in-place recycled rubber. This poured-in-place ground cover is almost twice the cost of the playground equipment. However, the high upfront cost is a worthy investment.

We cannot fulfill this dream without you. We need the community’s help to make “Mitchell’s Landing” happen. TMCF has been granted 501(c)3 status. All donations made to the foundation can be considered tax deductible. The Chang Family has donated each month the cost of running the foundation and no board members are paid for their time. This foundation was created out of love and devotion and The Chang family is incredibly grateful for the opportunity to help facilitate good change in our community. Please know that what you donate will go directly to building Mitchell's Landing and making a permanent impact on our community.

Please help us continue Mitchell’s good story. The Chang family hopes you will join them and the foundation in being a part of continuing Mitchell’s good story. Together we can build playgrounds that benefit San Antonio families and community. Within a year of Mitchell passing, the foundation has raised over $150,000, from over 350 donors, in Mitchell's name! The Foundation knows with the community and your support, we will build an inclusive playground that benefits all children. A playground that will bring not only families but the community together. I ask you now.....
Will you become a part of Mitchell's Good Story?
Please help us spread the good story by sharing this page with friends, family, coworkers, or anyone who might help. Spreading the good story will not only help us make “Mitchell’s Landing” come to fruition but also encourage others to begin their good story.

Let us honor Mitchell by keeping his light alive. Let us be kind and give love freely, as he did. Let us find happiness with our friends and family, as he did. Let us be more generous and help others, as he did. It doesn’t matter how big or small your good deeds are. Regardless of size, in the end, one good deed is but one good deed. However, doing little bits of good throughout one’s life time is what will overwhelm the world. Overwhelm the world with us!
