Max is a sweet and gentle dog, about 5-6 years old who loved Maggie, a woman in the neighborhood and where he scavenged for food in the impoverished neighborhood of Little Haiti, Miami, Florida.
Maggie always tried to feed and care for him, but he would rarely let her get close, traumatized and scared from years of abuse and neglect from his owners. On March 12, Maggie noticed Max now had a necrotic, deep wound around half of Max’s neck and, absolutely terrified, tried everything to help.
Maggie could not save Max alone, but with a circle of skillful and fierce animal advocates the crisis called our communtiy to action. Responding to suffering animals in need is a dire needed effort on the front-lines for community wellness.

RESCUE MISSION ACTIVATED
When Max ran away, Maggie called her friends in the neighborhood and started a search party of women to find and save him before it was too late. For days our group looked tirelessly, walking the neighborhood, speaking to neighbors and searching in every nook and cranny. Finally, severely injured and slowly dying, he heard our voices and came out to the street, ready to be rescued.
Exhausted, he sat in the middle of the road. He didn't walk away from us this time. He came right to us, limping on his remaining working though feeble, three legs.
He knew we were there to help him and was so sweet and gentle. Finally, he let himself drink some water and be taken into a waiting van where we rushed him to the veterinarian at Pet House Clinic, Miami Beach, Florida who stayed late to perform emergency surgery and sew his neck back together.
The vet suspects the wound was due to an embedded collar, from struggling to get free from being tied up in a backyard and neglected. It is only through community collaboration the front line street response to suffering animals is possible.
Max will never return to the street because our group of neighbors collaborated to arrange for his rescue, committing to fostering and caring for him through his whole recovery and eventual adoption.
WHAT FUNDS ARE NEEDED FOR MAX’S RECOVERY
What we are left with are expensive medical bills for Max, not only for his neck surgery but for an emergency hip surgery he needs. He was limping badly and when the vet did x-rays she found an infection on the hip socket and femur bone, likely due to a systemic infection caused by the festering neck wound.

~$3,500 for Orthopedic surgery for hip and leg
