On Sunday 7th September I am running The Big Half London Marathon to raise money for a very special organisation – The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential (IAHP).
Many of you may know that my son was born extremely premature at 24 weeks, weighing just 620 grams. At 24 weeks the chances of survival are 1 in 3, and for those who do survive, 1 in 2 face long-term challenges. Many of his first friends sadly did not make it, and many who did face incredible daily battles to learn the things we take for granted: movement, communication, eating, breathing.
The staff at IAHP have dedicated their lives to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible for children with brain injuries. Their work, grounded in decades of research, delivers practical, life-changing programmes.
They give children the tools to achieve things that may once have seemed impossible — to take a first step, to speak a first word, to explore the world with greater independence.
There is a Bible verse I think about sometimes:
“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’”
For over 70 years the staff at IAHP have answered that call — for my son, and for countless others. For us, IAHP represents more than just therapy. They represent hope, progress, and the belief that “impossible” is just a starting point.
For my son, IAHP’s work has been life-changing:
• Without them, he would not see the world so clearly.
• Without them, he would not be talking — sharing his thoughts and laughter.
• Without them, he would not be moving with the confidence and freedom he has today.
It takes a village to raise a child. For us, that village includes doctors, nurses, therapists — and the extraordinary team at IAHP. But it also includes people like you.
Your donation, no matter the size, will help fund the expertise, programmes, and resources that change a child’s life.
Thank you for being part of our village.
