The Huckleberry Explorers Club

Greetings, our dear Huckleberry friends!

Here we are to report on another glorious and jubilant year at the Huckleberry Explorers Club Museum and General Store and Gardens.

We continued our collaborations with local musicians in our museum and garden, including Michael Malis' Other Tones series, which supports performances of experimental and new music. This was really great. Even I, Shuffy, performed!

In addition, we supported some fine Detroit poets with readings in the garden, and have just published the first book supported by The Huckleberry Explorers Club, The Sabbath Day, a book written by our dear friend in Detroit, Preacha Otis. Now for sale in the General Store.

If that weren't enough, we showed some incredibly wonderful and some downright terrible films in our beloved microcinema. As well, we enjoyed weekly meditations in the garden and had several harvest festivals, including Strawberry Fest in which we tried to eat the grotesque amount of strawberries we are now growing.

Speaking of our garden, which provides joy and food to the neighborhood has, thanks to your support of 2023, become more delightful than ever, with improvements made to the cob oven (next year, green roof!), vegetable beds, and our bird-seducing pond. We also planted about 10 or 15 new trees (I have lost count) and many more pollinators, attracting sexy butterflies and dragonflies and houseflies (they are pollinators too, don't hate).

But mostly we are continuing to be a space of beauty and wonder here in Detroit, free and open to all, with our aforementioned Museum and General Store, where you can always buy something useless, contemplate the fragile nature of the material world, receive a hug, or just enjoy a free cup of coffee and some conversation.

Friends, we received your support last year and it was so appreciated. Now we ask again. We are helped immensely by a team of dedicated and tireless volunteers - but frankly, the garden has become so enormous, we really need to start paying some folks for help. $3 buys someone a cup of coffee. $100 plants a tree. $300 pays a neighborhood friend to help us mow and dig holes.

Please help us carry on with our brave efforts here in this most magnificent city of Detroit.

Happy Autumn, dear Huckleberry friends! What a triumphant and inspiring year we had here at The Huckleberry Explorers Club.

The opening of our microcinema was an event celebrated by all who enjoy films both terrible and outrageously pretentious. We also used this cozy space for our evening of Zen-inspired works that focused on visiting filmmaker Benjamin Greené.

And if that weren't enough, we were honored to participate in local musician/composer/impresario Michael Malis' Other Tones series, which included performances of experimental and new music in our museum and garden. How great.

But mostly we've been continuing to make a space of beauty and wonder here in Detroit, free and open to all, with our aforementioned Museum and General Store, where you can always contemplate the fragile nature of the material world or just enjoy a free cup of coffee and some conversation.

And of course, our delightful garden, providing joy and food to the neighborhood, and which, thanks to your support of 2022, has become more delightful than ever, especially with the addition of our new bird-seducing pond! (Please see the below video and note that the pond looks even better now than when I filmed this video in July).

And our next new project, you ask? Well, I shall answer and say that this winter, we will begin the heartbreaking and backbreaking but great and important job of clearing decades of dumping from the mini-forest immediately behind the garden. This job will require much labor and supplies, but will support the many animals and birds already living in this forest. It is our intention to plant a greater diversity of trees as well as create walking paths that will connect our garden through the forest and to a community greenspace being created by Prince Concepts.

Hello friends!

We are The Huckleberry Explorers Club Museum & Gardens & General Store, a 501c3 nonprofit space for all. For the past six years, we have been renovating a building in the heart of magnificent Detroit that has become a magical space for meetings, hugs, contemplating the fragile nature of objects, and experiencing the wonders of life. Anyone and everyone is invited to our Museum and General Store, where one can have a free cup of coffee and read the latest issue of our celebrated and informative publication The Huckleberry Notice, purchase something very general from our store and/or do absolutely nothing.

Wander through the gardens and you shall find astonishing birds and butterflies sailing around our pergola, vining secret paths that lead to mysterious glens. Behind our building, where once were five empty lots we have planted over thirty trees, three pollinator gardens and hundreds of bulbs, native shrubs and flowers.

And we haven’t even mentioned our cob clay oven, only now we just did!

We are also a free notary public.

Friends, with our group of inspiring volunteers, we have been creating this space by the sweat of our brows and the dimes in our pockets. But now we are moving ever further into the future-past and we need your help! We are raising money for our 2023 activities, including a small indoor cinema, a bird-seducing pond in the garden, and paying a small stipend to our currently unpaid director.
