The Hetrick-Martin Institute

The Emery Awards are one of HMI's signature fundraising events of the year.  Our mission is to help LGBTQ youth attend the Emery Awards so they may experience the power of this evening and our community.  We need them to know they are part of our community and we care.  We want to celebrate, support and fund a future for our LGBTQ young people facing obstacles for life's most basic needs:  a safe environment, homelessness, food, education,  and most importantly love. 

Last December I joined the HMI board for a 9-year commitment to support young people who deserve a safe, supportive environment and a community in which to achieve their full potential. I am amazed at the amount of programs available to our LGBTQ that have been displaced, made to feel unsafe and more.  But these programs and support tools come at a cost.

The Hetrick-Martin Institute is the oldest and largest nonprofit agency created to serve lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth between the ages of 13 and 24.  Our After-School programs invite youth to explore the arts, culture, tutoring, job skills, and health issues—with an LGBTQ focus.  They are also about building a community and a safe environment for these young people to rebuild and strive to reach their full potential.


Every year thousands of young people come to HMI to access opportunities and supportive resources for building a better life.

Hello Beautiful People! We, the atthebelasco team, want to help Hedwig and The Angry Inch tear down the Berlin Wall as hard as they brought down the house with a FUNDRAISER to benefit the Hetrick-Martin Institute.

We worked closely with our friends, the Darren Criss Belasco Buyout Team, to help make their fundraiser an OUTSTANDING SUCCESS. As of July 20, 2015 their donation total was $12,501! That is INSANE!

We are ready to keep the good spirits flowing!

It has just been announced that the Broadway run of Hedwig and The Angry Inch is closing on September 13, 2015.

This fundraiser is in honor of every Hedwig, every Yitzhak, every Tit and, of course, Stephen Trask and JCM (deserves to be noted twice).

And to celebrate the last show we are tearing down the wall for the last night donning that Sarah Jessica Parka with donations going directly to the Hetrick-Martin Institute for LGBT Youth!

Curious as to what the Hetrick-Martin institute (HMI) is? HMI is the nation’s oldest and largest non-profit leader in LGBTQ youth service programming with life-saving initiatives in New York, Newark and across the country. HMI believes that all young people, regardless of sexual orientation or identity deserve a safe environment in which to achieve their full potential. For every ticket purchased on Broadway, HEDWIG makes a donation, so we’re following their lead. Let’s help Hedwig close with a BANG with a donation to HMI.

Starting August 23, 2015 and running through September 13, 2015 we going to be running our Tear It Down campaign!

Our goal is $1989 (the year that the Berlin Wall came down).

By donating as little as $1 you’re tearing it down with the Hedwig family and for every donation you will have your name put on a list given to them on the last day of the run.

From East Berlin to Junction City and everywhere in between, we’re hoping you can join us to make a difference as we lift up our hands one last time.

To celebrate the last show of Darren Criss owning the stage in Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Broadway we thought there was no better way than to metaphorically “sell out” his last performance with fans from all around the world and have every cent go directly to The Hetrick-Martin Institute  for LGBT Youth!

So, like who is this Hetrick-Martin Institute and why have we never heard about them before, JERRY? I’m glad you asked! Hetrick-Martin institute (HMI) is the nations oldest and largest non-profit leader in LGBTQ youth service programming with life-saving initiatives in New York, Newark and across the country. Just like our leading man, Darren, HMI believes that all young people, regardless of sexual orientation or identity deserve a safe environment in which to achieve their full potential. For every ticket purchased on Broadway, HEDWIG makes a donation, so we’re following their lead.

So how does this work?

Assuming that each seat in the 1016 capacity Belasco Theatre is just $1, we hope to sell it out many times over.

So let’s make this really simple…

1. Our goal is $1016 (the number of seats in the Belasco Theatre)
2. We’re hoping to double or TRIPLE that goal
3. By donating as little as $1 you’re part of the Belasco Buy Out and will have your name on the list that’s given to Darren on the day of the final show. TA-DA!

But wait, there’s less! For every $1 you donate you’re going to be entered to win some little prizes from Miss Hedwig herself, including signed Playbills and some other fun stuff along the way. So make sure you’re following us on our Tumblr  and Twitter  to stay updated!

We’re running this fundraiser from Pride (June 28th), all the way up until 11:59PM on July 18th. We will be handing over the final amount raised, and the list of everyone who pledged a “seat” before Darren’s last show on July 19th.
