Hello everyone, I’m embarking on an epic adventure this summer: cycling the entire length of Great Britain, from John O'Groats to Land's End! This challenging journey is a heartfelt mission to raise vital funds for the incredible Charlie Waller Trust (CWT).
The Charlie Waller Trust works tirelessly to promote the importance of mental wellbeing and ensure that young people have the support they need. The Trust was founded in memory of Charlie Waller, a bright, kind, and much-loved young man who tragically died by suicide at the age of 28 after experiencing depression. His family’s powerful response was to create an organisation dedicated to preventing similar tragedies by:
* Equipping young people with resources in schools and colleges to understand and look after their mental health.
* Empowering adults who work with youth to recognise and respond to mental health difficulties.
* Campaigning to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health.
Their work is crucial, and every pound raised directly supports their mission to save young lives.
My commitment to this cause is both professional and deeply personal.
Professionally, I am the Head of the Charlie Waller Institute (CWI) at the University of Reading. The CWI exists because of a shared vision between the University and the Trust, and Charlie’s legacy inspires everything we do. Before this, I spent eight years leading early help services in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), witnessing firsthand the critical importance of early intervention.
Personally, my commitment to wellbeing extends to my community. I've increasingly focused on mental health as Chairman of my local Roundtable, especially after the recent tragic loss of a dear friend and member to suicide. This loss, and the challenges faced by young people I've supported throughout my career, are the driving force behind every mile I will pedal.
This cycle ride from John O'Groats to Land's End is my commitment. While it will be physically demanding, every mile will be motivated by the vital work of the Charlie Waller Trust.
Your donation, no matter how big or small, will enable CWT to continue and expand their crucial work, specifically by:
* Delivering training to teachers and school staff to create a supportive mental health ethos in schools.
* Providing essential resources and guidance to thousands of young people and their families.
Please support me in this challenge and help the Charlie Waller Trust continue their crucial work in empowering young people and fostering a society that prioritises mental wellbeing.
Thank you for your generosity and support!
