Seed Money for Natchitoches, Louisiana
Our community garden provides food for the residents of West Natchitoches, a predominantly African-American, low-income neighborhood. The garden and corner store we run are stable sources of food in this neighborhood where the nearest grocery store is over a mile away, no public transportation exists, there are limited sidewalks, and 40 households are home to elderly/disabled residents in the 130-unit HUD sponsored housing project across the street from our garden. Nearly 60% of residents in the complex are classified as extremely low income.
The recent storms have only served to amplify the food insecurity facing our neighbors. Please help us with "seed" money: to buy seeds, seedlings, and fresh produce to provide West Natchitoches, while we wait for our 20 raised garden beds to begin producing once more. Any additional money we raise will be used to help with grocery expenses for our neighbors. Thank you.
