Support Incarcerated People in Texas During Storm
As winter weather continues to endanger people across the state of Texas, it is urgent now more than ever that we support incarcerated individuals, who are often overlooked in times of crisis. Texas jails are severely mistreating incarcerated people during this time, with many having little to no warm food, no blankets, no water or power, and unsanitary conditions. Please donate whatever you are able to support the Texas Jail Project, an organization on the front lines of aiding incarcerated people who are threatened by the current Texas storms.
We are Students Against the Death Penalty at William & Mary Law School and seek to support incarcerated communities, but this fundraiser is by no means limited to the William & Mary community! Please share widely!
The mission of Texas Jail Project is to empower Texas families to find services and solutions for incarcerated loved ones in crisis and to transform Texas county jails into more humane, healthier facilities. In the past few days, the Texas Jail Project has been distributing money directly to incarcerated people and their families.
Quotes from the Texas Jail Project's Twitter page:
"At a pace of $4K-$5K a day, we will continue distributing these funds to folks trapped in jails and their families, and to compensate our volunteers who are working to transcribe complaints. Thank you to all our amazing volunteers. We couldn't do this without y'all!"
"If you have a loved one in a county jail please email us at [email redacted] or call our HelpLine @ [phone redacted]. We're doing all we can with our entire team being affected by power outages. We're gathering & submitting concerns & complaints as quickly as we can."
"Update on TX county jail winter storm crisis. We're hearing directly from people inside jails across the state and their loved ones. Since this morning alone, we've distributed over $2,000 in commissary and phone accounts and have enlisted volunteers to increase volume.
Here is what we are hearing from individual counties: 1) Bexar - "My spouse is at Bexar county adult detention center. He has informed me today, the pipes at the jail have been frozen since yesterday and they have no access to water. They're not being provided bottled water."
2) Smith - "The water is coming out brown and we were told not to drink the water."
3) Montgomery - "They do not have access to clean drinking water. The water was off due to inclement weather on Monday, Feb 15th. On Tuesday Feb 16th, the inmates only have dribbling water, that is unfit for consumption. I understand this is a winter storm but steps could have been taken to ensure that there would be enough water on hand."
4) The cruelty continues. What the Texas snow & power outages mean for incarcerated people. Just in from a man caged pretrial in Harris County: "We don't have any running water anymore. No drinking water. Rations are now half measures. Tensions are running high here."
