PLEASE READ - DUKE NEEDS IS. ❤️
Hi, my name is Dory Cox, and I'm reaching out to you with a heartfelt plea to support Texas All Creatures Rescue, Inc.
Last Thursday, we were alerted by a fellow rescuer about a dog in the Alvarado area who appeared to be in very poor condition. What began as an attempt to simply help a dog quickly became much more serious, and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department became involved.
The following morning, with permission from the owner, our team went onto the property to check on him. The moment we saw Duke up close, we knew there was no time to waste.
His condition was critical.
I immediately called Park Place Animal Hospital and asked permission to remove Duke and take him straight to our veterinarian. On the drive there, his breathing was extremely labored and his tongue began turning blue. I truly did not know if he was going to make it to the hospital.
Duke was suffering from an overwhelming list of medical problems, including severe bacterial and yeast skin infections with extensive hair loss, parasites, significant swelling throughout his body, and severe weakness. His condition was so poor that initially they were unable to even obtain the bloodwork they needed.
We are hopeful that as Duke becomes stronger, they will soon be able to obtain bloodwork so we can determine, among other things, whether he is heartworm positive. They will also be performing a fecal test to determine what additional parasites may need to be treated.
Duke has remained hospitalized at Park Place since Friday, receiving extensive medical care, medications, medicated baths, multiple meals throughout the day, and around-the-clock monitoring. For most of the weekend, he did not even get up.
But our boy is beginning to fight.♥️
He is now getting up and walking a little, his appetite is improving, and we are seeing small but encouraging signs of progress. We remain in constant communication with Dr. Holbrook, and if Duke continues improving, we are hopeful he may be released as early as Friday. From there, he will go into medical boarding with one of our fosters and continue what we expect will be a long road to recovery.
After multiple interactions with Duke’s owner, I was able to get her to agree to surrender Duke to Texas All Creatures Rescue. He is now officially in our care, and our focus is giving him every opportunity to heal and experience the life he deserves.
There is also an active cruelty investigation involving Duke, so we will allow law enforcement to handle that portion of his story.
What we can focus on is Duke.
We could not leave him there. We could not look at this dog who was in desperate need of help and walk away.
His hospitalization, medical treatment, and continued medical boarding will be costly. If you are able to help with Duke’s expenses, no amount is too small, and we would be incredibly grateful.
