Summit Denali High School is a small charter school located in Sunnyvale, California. This is the first year our students were able to attend school on their very own campus. For our senior class’s final AP Environmental Science project, we hope to kickstart a community garden and compost tumbler so that we may leave a legacy project for future Denali students and families to enjoy.
The students have poured so much work into planning multiple mini-projects that the garden area will consist of (a greenhouse, butterfly garden, vegetable garden, composting and a mura!) However, we are having trouble receiving ample funding, delaying the execution of this wonderful project.
The group is eager to get started, and we would greatly appreciate anything you could contribute so that we may make their dreams a reality.
Greenhouse:
Our goal with this project is to build three greenhouses: one for a control group, and two for experimental groups. Students have been planning out what type of greenhouse would be best for our campus, problem-solving the lack of sunlight in this area by looking at different electrical systems, and finally considering a possible irrigation system.
Composting:
Food waste contributes to climate change by releasing methane gas into our atmosphere. We plan to reduce our school’s food waste by purchasing a compost tumbler to put all of our coffee grounds, vegetable, and fruit waste in to help make nutrient-rich compost for our gardens and eliminate food waste from our trash cans.
Butterfly Garden:
By planting flowers that attract butterfly populations and working with butterfly chrysalis, we will increase and help butterfly populations in the area. We will be using recycled and cleaned tires for this project.
General Gardening:
For our general gardening project, students have been researching what they should grow, how they should distribute the crops, and sunlight mapping. They are also figuring out how to construct, fill, and plant in the garden beds.
Mural:
The mural is a creative way to express community support for our garden as it adds a touch of student expression and talent. The mural will also uphold the environmental values of our community and help beautify the garden.
