We have studied the social and psychological aspects of what puts people at risk for suicide in the US, European countries and Eastern Asia. We use a short term psychodynamic treatment which we have found more successful than other treatments. Currently we are treating combat veterans with PTSD who are at risk for suicide. We began by treating 100 Veitnam combat veterans with PTSD, a number of factors contributed to the ones that were suicidal but the most significant was guilt over their behavior in combat. The veterans are tested before they begin the treatment and then mid treatment at 6 weeks, at the end of the 12 weeks of treatment and then at 3 and 6 months post treatment.
