The Vallejo Capitol Stairs Project needs your help...we are almost there!
Donation will be used solely for the benefit of the Capitol Stairs Project! Saint Vincent 's Hill Neighborhood Coalition is our Fiscal Sponsor for tax deductions.
The Project - UPDATE
Vallejo’s 100+-year-old Capitol Street Stairs climb the hill from downtown to Vallejo’s Historic District. Gone are the hazardous trees, damaged storm drain, and a seedy and unwholesome environment. The Stairs’ risers are about to be transformed into a beautiful mosaic mural representing Vallejo’s and Mare Island’s 170 + years history.
52 risers, each 10 feet wide, will be covered with custom-made art tiles created by renowned artists, Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher, who created the tiles for San Francisco's famous 16th Avenue Stairs.
What’s been done so far?
The Capitol Stairs’ art tiles are completed, currently stored on Mare Island, and are scheduled to be installed this September 2021!
The tiles were paid for in part by the City of Vallejo's Participatory Budgeting Grant: The Arts, Beautification and Community Development Grant. The remaining funds required to pay for the art tiles have been paid for exclusively by the generosity of Vallejo citizens! Without Vallejo's community support, none of this could have been realized.
What’s next?
To complete the project, we need to raise funds for the final payments to the artists and to pay for the installation of the art tiles. Left over funds will help pay for landscaping the stairs’ surrounding hillside.

Please consider contributing to this worthy cause. Once completed it will become a great place to sit and enjoy a beautiful Vallejo sunset, to see colorful art tiles and landscaping that attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. You can also take in Vallejo and Mare Island history, as the tiles artfully depict landmarks, both past and present.
