For my senior project I have chosen to do what I hope will be a very special night for my friends. I am organizing a concert for the special education students and the community around me in Cherokee County. My goal for this event is to create something that these kids and their families will never forget! A very close family friend, Eric Dodd, who is an extremely talented country artist, will perform live at the event. I’m calling the event "Skyler’s Special Night for Friends".

I am also happy to announce that all donations from my Special Night will benefit Cherokee County Special Olympics!

Friends and Family,

I am reaching out to you in hopes that you will contribute to the Special Olympics of Georgia, which is a cause that has been very important to me since I began volunteering with them in 2007. Before I get into all of the background info, my goal is to raise $1,500 and you can donate by clicking "Donate Now" on the right side of this page and follow the instructions to donate money directly to the Special Olympics.

I have loved working with the Special Olympics athletes over the last 7 years as they are the most sincere, compassionate, and fun-loving group of people I have ever come across. It is hard to overstate not only the joy experienced by the athletes during the tournaments, but also the benefit of the social skills developed through athletic competition.

I began as a chaperone as a college sophomore, and I currently serve on the Games Organizing Committee as the Venue Director for the Flag Football and Basketball Skills tournaments, in addition to serving on the Honorary Board. As Honorary Board members, we are responsible for fundraising, and this is the impetus behind my request to you today.

I was thinking of ways to show appreciation for donations from my friends and family. Dumping ice water on myself seemed a little played out and shaving my head seemed a little too easy. Instead, I will be running. If I can raise $1,000 from all of you generous people, I will run a 10k, and I will run a half marathon if I can raise $1,500. While this may not seem like a monumental "thank you," anyone that knows me will know that I am not naturally built for speed or distance, so this certainly poses a challenge. Additionally, I will be personally matching the first $250 donated.

I look forward to seeing your support towards this worthy cause and I hope to see all of you volunteering at the Winter Games, which take place in Atlanta from Friday, January 23 to Sunday, January 25. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions ([email redacted]).

I am raising money towards my Honorary Board membership for Special Olympics Georgia. The mission of Special Olympics Georgia is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Their goal is to help bring persons with intellectual disabilities into the larger society under conditions whereby they are accepted, respected, and given the chance to become useful and productive citizens. As an Honorary Board Member,

I am tasked to raise funds to for the continued development of SOGA programs like Project Unify, Healthy Athletes, and year-round State Games.
