A little history:
It all began in 1975, and the Madison County Bicentennial Committee was developing plans to celebrate the nation's birth. The Mars Hill University Theatre Department was seeking ways to put the knowledge and experience of its faculty and students to use beyond the school year. Jim "T" Thomas, and C. Robert Jones co-founded the Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre (SART).
From the beginning SART’s purpose or mission has been to produce quality theatre by a professional non-profit company in area that is considered to be economically and culturally deprived, to present plays concerning Appalachia that portray the rich heritage and culture of it’s people, and to promote the development of new works.
SART has a 40-year history of professional performances. World Premieres of new plays have graced the Owen stage for their first runs, Appalachian/Southern heritage plays have educated and honored the locale of our artistic home, musicals both big and small have delighted our audiences, and the magic of theatre has effected both company members and patrons alike.
