Citizens Against the Parallel Products Project
For the past two years the Citizens Against Parallel Products Project have been working to stop the expansion of a recycling and waste facility at the Business Park in New Bedford. Parallel Products wants to build a massive sewage and trash plant next to a residential community. I'm raising money to benefit South Coast Neighbors United Incorporated to stop this proposed facility. Your donation will help make an impact.
If approved and built this facility will accept 50 dry tons per day of sludge from other cities, process 1500 tons per day of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), operate 24/7, and add pollution to New Bedford, which is already one of the most burdened cities in the state.
Over 350 chemicals, with more than 60 considered extremely toxic by the EPA will be transported and processed. Potential accidents and spills could lead to extreme pollution. Health risks include, asthma, shortness of breath, respiratory disease, cardiac disease, stroke, allergies, etc....
The project will generate approximately 418 truck trips per day. A decrease in property value of up to 13% occurs when stacks from a waste site are visible from a home Noise from heavy truck traffic lowers property value at a rate of 30 to 50 time greater than a car. Heavy trucks emit noise 16 time louder than car traffic. The truck traffic created from the project will put our community and children at risk. A fatality is twice as likely when a car is involved in a crash with a truck vs. another car.
These sites affect water quality, air quality, produce smoke and dust, and create pest infestations. These facilities require large amounts of energy to run, are an explosive hazard, and produce odor.
Parallel Products has already been found in violation of glass dumping at the proposed site by the City of New Bedford's Conservation Commission.
This project is scheduled in two phases, phase 1 includes and expansion of glass recycling, and phase 2 includes MSW and Biosolids processing. We currently are in the first phases of the phase 1 permitting process. We have submitted an appeal to a site plan approval which one of our members paid for. We are expecting this fight to be costly and would appreciate your support.
Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.
