Urgent: Help Families Affected by the Afghanistan Earthquake
On Sunday, August 31, 2025, a powerful 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, devastating communities and causing tragic loss of life and widespread destruction. The quake's epicenter was in Nangarhar province, with tremors felt across the region. Hundreds of families have been left without homes, food, or access to essential medical care. The situation on the ground is dire, and the need for immediate assistance is critical.

Our organization, STEP (Society to Empower People), a Virginia-based 501(c)(3) non-profit, is launching this emergency GoFundMe campaign to provide immediate relief to the affected families. Our own staff and survey teams have been dispatched to the affected areas to assess the needs and ensure that aid is delivered quickly and effectively.

Urgent Relief Needed: Devastating Floods Displace Over 100,000 in Eastern Afghanistan

Flash floods, high winds and heavy rain brought by a series of storms have devastated eastern Afghanistan, killed at least 40 people and causing widespread destruction. The hardest-hit area has been in and around Jalalabad city, the capital of Nangarhar province. Initial reports estimate over 100,000 people have been displaced, with entire villages submerged, crops destroyed, and essential infrastructure like roads and water wells heavily damaged.

Society to Empower People (STEP), a registered 501(C)(3) nonprofit based in Virginia dedicated to supporting Afghan communities, is launching this emergency GoFundMe campaign to provide critical assistance to those affected by this disaster.

Nooristan Flood Emergency Appeal by STEP
Nooristan has been devastated by massive floods. It needs your urgent assistance.

The death toll from the recent flooding in Afghanistan’s eastern province of Nooristan has risen to at least 120, with dozens of people still missing. Rescue operations are still underway, days after heavy rains overwhelmed Kamdesh district in the remote, province. Around 200 houses were completely destroyed or washed away, suggesting there are likely many more people still missing.

The floods swept through a narrow ravine late on 28 July, wiping out much of the village of Miardish in Kamdesh district. The damage has not only taken dozens of lives but also destroyed livelihoods. Initial assessments also showed nearly 30 business premises and 7 bridges were destroyed, as well as water and electricity infrastructure. Over 360 hectares of agricultural land and 3,200 fruit trees were also destroyed. At least 3 mosques were also destroyed.

Society to Empower People (STEP)'s own field team is assessing the situation and is ready to deliver essential aid directly to the affected area and victims of the devastating floods. Please donate generously to this urgently needed cause.
