WALK A MILE: Mile 9 - Honduras
In Honduras, I walked with a woman named Gisela to help fight malnutrition in children. Gisela runs monthly nutritional clinics where she weighs and measures all children under the age of 5 in a community. She distributes nutritional supplements to help mothers provide proper nutrition to their children.
QUICK FACTS:
- Intibuca is one of the poorest regions of Honduras and has devastatingly high infant mortality rates.
- Gisela runs nutritional clinics for families with children under the age of 5 in 60 different villages throughout the region.
- If a child shows signs of slow development, a nutritional supplement called Chispuditos is given free of charge to the mother. She mixes the powder with water or milk to provide her child with the necessary calories, vitamins, and minerals.
- When a child is adequately fed, they have less risk for chronic illness and can thrive mentally, physically, and emotionally.
- A year's supply of nutritional packets for one child costs 500 Honduran lempiras or US $20.23
All donations will benefit Shoulder to Shoulder - a 501c3 nonprofit that works alongside Honduras to improve their education, nutrition, and health. Shoulder to Shoulder does not impose solutions but instead works "shoulder to shoulder" with the people they serve. They know that the best solutions are found within each community.
