Make Sertoma Astro Park Fully Accessible & Inclusive
Sertoma Astro Park has a long history as a cherished public recreational space in Beatrice. Established in 1971 by the Beatrice Sertoma Club, the park now features an ADA-compliant splash pad and restroom facility, a picnic shelter, and displays the MGI-Series Rocket, “Honest John”.
The playground equipment, which was installed in 1988, is the focal point for renovations. Now at 35 years old, it requires replacement to meet modern ADA standards. We aim to install new ADA-compliant playground equipment, rubber matting, and concrete sidewalks to make Sertoma Astro Park fully accessible and inclusive.
The proposed playground design features 2 separate play structures: one for school-aged play, and one for preschool-aged play, which is important as several daycares frequently visit the park.
Another aspect of this project is to install rubber matting around the play structures. The current playground structure is on sand, rather than rubber. This creates an issue when a child plays in the splash pad, and then becomes sandy when playing on the playground. The sand then coats the playset creating a safety issue.
Finally, a new ADA-compliant sidewalk is planned to encircle the playsets.
The City of Beatrice is prepared to fund approximately half of the project costs. The Beatrice Sertoma Club is fundraising for the remaining project costs. Sertoma has already secured pledges from the Gage County Foundation and other community members. Please consider donating to help bring this project to fruition.
