On the eve of war, Joan battles with her demons, rousing her troops to the battlefield, the salvation of France, and certain death. During this extended soliloquy, Joan appeals to God, demons, her troops, even the ghost of her father to help her save France and herself. But Joan is plagued by delusions and personalities that may be either spirits and premonitions, or her own undiagnosed mental illness, so misunderstood at the time.
La Pucelle has been performed at both The National Arts Club and Torn Page. We are now moving to The Tank for an 8 show run. Our team has been working hard to develop this work and bring it to you but we need your help. In order to complete the production, we are raising $5,500 to contribute to community and production development costs. Our production aims not only to appeal to Shakespeare fans but to people of color and those who may not have access to affordable theater in the city. As such, contributions will go not only to costumes, props, and cinematography, but engagement with communities of color and Shakespeare fans and Torn page: our generous space donor and co-producer so that other artists doing this work may benefit the way we have!
About the Production
John Reed takes inspiration from Shakespeare’s Henry VI mention of Joan of Arc and restructures them (along with several other classic Shakespeare texts) in order to allow Joan to tell her own story- much more complicated than The Bard’s disparaging portrayal of her as a promiscuous uneducated witch, or of her popular religious idealization as a pious, divinely inspired saint. This production aims to show Joan as a complex human- a child soldier, thrust into a war she did not start. These same tropes take place throughout the world in history and in the present. In the United States, it brings itself to light through our young activists, forced to fight against wars started long before them. Environmentalists like Little Miss Flint and the visitor Greta Thunberg, Gun Control activists like the survivors of the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas shooting, and Black Lives Matter activists galvanized by the murder of young Black people in the United States. In a climate where young activists are built up towards popular sainthood and torn down just as quickly, we need to fight the urge to demonize or canonize those who are still growing in their identity and activism. La Pucelle urges us to protect our young heroes just as much as they fight to protect us.

We are a collaborative team of artists dedicated to telling the story of Joan La Pucelle. Our team includes:
Mieko Gavia (Producer/Joan) an actor, writer, producer and co-owner of Black Revolutionary Theater Workshop
Chanel Byas (Producer) a producer, stage manager and member of Black Revolutionary Theater Workshop
John Reed (Writer/Cinematography) is a journalist, novelist, filmmaker, and current professor at The New School
Tony Torn (Director) is a writer/actor/director/teacher with over 100 film and stage credits
Kemba Barnes (Squire/Spirit/Soldier) is a dancer in New York City
Michael Wiener (Jack Cade) is a writer and actor in New York City
Rolls Andre (Father) is an actor from New York City
Nora Alexander (Stage Manager) is a stage manager/ writer/ director/ arts admin
Kira deCoudres (Sound Designer) is a remix media artist and theorist specializing in topics of body-mind decay, mutation, and mutilation
Torn Page (Producer) is a Rehearsal/ Performance space, and the historic home of Rip Torn and Geraldine Page
