We are seeking $15,000 each for three schools in food-insecure neighborhoods in Brownsville, Brooklyn led by amazing principals to empower them to create healthy places to live and learn.
At each school, students will run a weekly farm stand and cafe, featuring fresh produce from local farmers and delicious nutritional dishes and offerings like fresh orange juice or smoothies or soups to create healthy options for a neighborhood systemically deprived of access to affordable, nearby fresh fruits and vegetables.
Those of us in more affluent neighborhoods of New York City may take for granted our right to access nearby stores and corners and farmers markets flush with appealing, fresh produce. But most neighborhoods east of Prospect Park - largely neighborhoods of color - do not have this. So, Seeds in the Middle is training and educating and empowering local residents and schools to create and run their own healthy, sustainable businesses.
Know when you give you are also supporting LOCAL FARMERS and black farmers, as we are actively trying to ensure some of our offerings support everyone. Note, if you give $100, we gift you a bottle of raw, infiltered honey from our black farmers near Rocky Mount, North Carolina!
You can give to any of the schools and indicate which you want to support. Here they are!
PS-IS 178, 2163 Dean Street: The three boys in the photo are from our current Ocean Hill-Brownsville Farm Stand/Cafe, run every Wednesday 12:30-3p. We may be the only year-round farm stand in central Brooklyn's neediest neighborhoods. Principal Loren Cooper is amazing and incredibly supportive. In all our schools, we seek to integrate curriculum and academic achievement along with the health benefits of running their own fresh business. Please stop by any Wednesday! IS 392 , 104 Sutter Avenue, Brownsville: This middle school is also in an area swamped with fast and junk food with limited to no access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Brownsville has one of the highest rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, premature death and Covid-19 fatalities in NYC. That's why the leadership wants their students to start a farm stand/cafe (Need $10=$15,000 to launch 12-15 week market with EBT/SNAP, paid market manager, etc)
Brooklyn Collegiate High School - This high school, just a block from PS-IS 178 wants to launch an early morning cafe with gourmet coffee, fresh juices and healthy breakfast options like smoothies or oatmeal plus a Saturday farm stand - $15,000) This would be an amazing development in Ocean Hill-Brownsville as having a Wednesday farm stand at PS-IS 178 PLUS BK Collegiate on Saturdays would literally transform the food environment from dire to rich, plus all the students learn entrepreneurial skills and are the age in which it is safer to distribute flyers and deliver to homes and seniors.
Charity Baptist Church, 142 Watkins - Pastor and Nora Wheelous kindly donate their space and let us use refrigerators to keep our produce fresh. We need funds to buy more refrigerators to store our farm produce. To We also want to help them get street lights and security cameras on Watkins Street, one of the most dangerous blocks in NYC - See their petition here
Any donation you give is more than we had yesterday. Feel free to comment on which place, if you have a choice, you'd like to support. You can also choose here
