In August of 2017, our lives were forever changed when we opened our home and hearts to foster a dog named Reba. Reba, a sweet southern girl, was rescued by the incredible team at NYC Second Chance Rescue, on a frigid 20-degree night from a backyard in South Carolina. Reba’s life up until that point was one of neglect, misery and loneliness. She endured unimaginable conditions; living outdoors on a chain without proper access to food or water. She was emaciated, plagued by parasites, and heartworm positive. She had never known the love and affection she so deserved.
From the moment we met Reba, she quickly melted our hearts with her goofy personality, unwavering love, and resilience. She loved us hard and with everything she had. She was overly protective of our family to a fault. Reba taught us valuable lessons about second chances, having a big heart, and loving unconditionally. Her favorite things were simple joys – belly rubs, snuggling on the couch, and lying in the sun outside. She may not have been perfect – she snored louder than a freight train, she could clear a room with her stinky toots, and her ‘unique’ appearance turned many heads during our walks – but she was perfectly our Reba! We couldn't help but make her ours by adopting her. In truth, we were the lucky ones.
A few months ago, our sweet Reba passed away. I miss her every day - her infectious enthusiasm, her unwavering loyalty, and her velvety soft ears.
To honor her memory, I will be running the Marine Corps Marathon at the end of October and raising funds for NYC Second Chance Rescue. Will you help? No amount is too small and will greatly impact many dogs like Reba. Thanks for considering and contributing to this cause that means so much to me!
With love,
Heather
