WA360 Team Gratitude- Sailing for Seacology
We’d like to introduce you to Team Gratitude: 4 friends, a fast little boat, 360 miles of saltwater, and a big mission to support island conservation. Be part of the adventure! Be a conservation donor! 100% of your donation goes to Seacology, a 501(c)(3) non-profit!
Summer is nearly here and with it we welcome you to be part of a great sailing adventure and to support island conservation along the way. Race with us from Washington’s Olympic Peninsula south to the bottom of Puget Sound, then north to Canada, then back again to Port Townsend where the journey begins. No motors allowed! The race has gray whales, funky currents, and a really tight squeeze through the narrow, hazard-strewn waters of Deception Pass or Swinomish Channel.
It is going to be a challenge and we are doing it in part for island conservation. We have teamed up with Seacology – a grassroots group that does something very cool and unique. The non-profit backs island communities as they conserve the lands and waters they call home. It works like this: communities partner with Seacology creating marine protected areas and land preserves, in exchange Seacology provides grants to address a community need – such as a community center or school. This win-win approach recognizes the efforts of indigenous communities and supports the economic incentive to preserve their natural resources. It also recognizes that local communities—who are often ignored by decision makers—can be the best stewards of the environment.
Here at Team Gratitude, we sail for Seacology because we care about preserving the way of life for island communities and protecting the incredible biodiversity of these fragile places.
