Justice For Chevy
Please help us raise funds to pay legal fees to get answers. Chevy was killed by his adoptive family after scratching a visiting child, rather than returned to the rescue who was pleading to take him back. Chevy deserves Justice!

5/16/25 UPDATE:
We have some great news on the Investigation side of things- Beaufort County Sheriff’s Department has opened one. This will not be a quick process but hopefully will bring answers.
I was contacted again on Monday 5/12/25 by the trainer that owns the company where Chevy was assessed (on 4/14/25). He told me he spoke with the adopters on the evening of 4/26/25 at around 5:30pm for 15 minutes. They stated they had Chevy in a room by himself. He said he offered to come by and re-evaluate him and they declined the offer, said they were having him euthanized. He believes he may have video footage of the evaluation and evaluation notes he can get to me. I have not received them yet.
Just a short breakdown of what we know if anyone’s missed the other updates:
- we do not have a location of Chevy’s body
- we have not found a confirmed vet that performed euthanasia on Chevy
- we have not found a confirmed trainer that has Chevy
- we have received no communication from the adopters since 4.26.25 at 12:03 pm when they said they found a trainer to take him
- We do have a DPH bite report that claims Chevy was euthanized on 4/26/25. This statement was made by the wife (adopter). The report also states Chevy scratched the child with his paw and no skin was broken. This statement was made by the child’s mother.
- We do have the statement of the director of Animal Control that she spoke with the wife (adopter) on 4/28/25 via telephone and the wife claimed she did not know where Chevy was, he was not on the property, he was aggressive and her husband handled it. Still waiting on our FOIA request that was submitted 4/30/25 to be returned.

5/12/25 UPDATE:
It’s been a long rainy weekend where we spent most of it reading about other cases where dogs were killed by adopters, compiling lists/ contact information of local Beaufort County officials and trying to enjoy Mothers Day (although I’d be lying if I said Chevy wasn’t heavy on my mind).
We did speak with his vet, the vet that he saw on 4/7/25, the vet that the family listed on the DPH bite report, and they confirmed that they did not euthanize him and he was not aggressive. So now we have both the word of the vet that treated him and the Trainer that assessed him that there was no aggression.
The Beaufort County Animal Control Director is standing by her stance that in S.C. you can kill your own dog whenever you want to for whatever you want. We do not agree with that and have stated so but until we get a resolution to who’s correct, they are refusing to investigate his death.

We have not received any response from the adopters or any attorney representing them despite sending them notice of a breech of contract suit and are proceeding with that in an attempt to recover Chevy’s body if he is in fact deceased.

5/8/25 UPDATE:
I was able to speak with Tammy today who is the direct supervisor of the investigator who prepared the bite report. I had several questions regarding this report, and when I called yesterday to speak to the investigator that prepared it, she said she could not speak to me. Tammy was able to elaborate on certain things without crossing any boundaries or giving me any information that I was not allowed to know.
Essentially, when an investigator puts one of these reports together, they go completely off what the parties involved tell them.
- When the Adopter told them that “the dog was euthanized on 4/26/25 and buried” that’s what the investigator wrote. There is no verification process with the vet, they do not ask any more questions about time of death, method of death, or where the dog is buried.
- They suggest that the dog be exhumed because that would be the safest course of action as far as rabies is concerned, but they cannot make an owner exhume the body and get it tested for rabies. They also do not call the vet themselves and ask them if they will exhume the body, they rely 100% on the owner of the dog to tell the truth. So in this case, when the owner said that “she called her vet and the vet said that he did not feel comfortable exhuming the dog’s body” the health department did not verify that with the vet.
Could the dog still be alive? Sure. Could the dog bite 40 more people? Sure. Could the dog have been killed in a manner that falls within the parameters of Animal Cruelty? ABSOLUTELY.
A flawed process? I’d say so considering the track record of parties in question but that’s the process regardless.
I will say Tammy was extremely sympathetic, professional and she even thanked me for what I do as someone involved in rescue.

5/6/25 UPDATE:
You think you want to know the truth until you know it.
I received the call today that Chevy is no longer living.
The feelings I’m experiencing right now are too much for words. I will update again when I have more information but I wanted to thank EVERYONE who was looking for him, who shared his post and who has reached out to me to make sure I’m handling this as best as anyone possibly could.
I will never understand the evil in this world but I have to believe he came into my life for a reason and this is not even close to being over.
This is the text I sent to his Shelter Director and Shelter Advocate the day he was adopted.
I couldn’t make this story up if I tried - this is literally what nightmares are made of.

5/1/25 AFTERNOON UPDATE:
1.) We were told by the Health Department this afternoon that an official bite report has been filed (today) by the parents of the child that was bitten on 4/25/25 (not the adopters). That would be 6 days AFTER the actual incident. The quarantine will be up on 5/5/25 At which point we can pull an official FOIA request and get a copy of the report. Hopefully we will know at that point where Chevy is. If Chevy is deceased (God Forbid) the investigation will be closed immediately and we can put our FOIA request in earlier. I will be checking back daily for information.
2.) We still have not received the official report from Beaufort County Animal Control regarding the conversation had Monday 4/28/25 as of 5:51 today. Hopefully we get that soon.
Things are progressing on the “civil side” and we hope to have some answers very soon.

5/1/25 MORNING UPDATE:
Thank you all so much for sharing our post and donating to the legal fee fundraiser. We have been able to raise $2000 in 24 hours which is absolutely AMAZING!
We have no news to report on Chevys whereabouts. The last I was told by adopters was that they “found a trainer to take him” and animal control was told “he is no longer on the property”.
We would again like to appeal to trainers in the area that may have him and or Veterinarians that may have Behaviorally Euthanized him (as adopters stated they were considering doing) to come forward. We just want to know if he is safe.
We are also seeking anyone who was bitten by Chevy to come forward. So far we have not heard from anyone that they were bitten and there are no reported bites on file with the local health department.
PLEASE DO NOT contact/ harass or anything of the like, the adopters. We are taking every LEGAL action we can and don’t need any vigilante behavior compromising our efforts. We all want answers but there is a correct way to go about getting them.

4/30/25 MORNING UPDATE:
Unfortunately, we have no new news on Chevy’s whereabouts. We have now set up a GoFundMe account to cover the legal fees required to find answers. If you would like to share or donate, you can do so via the link below.

4/28/25 AFTERNOON UPDATE:
1.) Animal Control did speak with the adopter today. They were told Chevy was not on the property, she would not disclose where he was or if he was alive or dead and said “her husband handled it”. She also made references to him being “aggressive” and when asked for proof of bites she said she had hired a lawyer and refused to speak anymore to the officer. I will post the official report once I have it.
2.) we also had someone come forward from a local veterinarian’s office that confirmed they did speak with someone about euthanizing Chevy on Saturday. They told them they would not do it. This tells us that the adopter was still seeking to end Chevys life AFTER being asked to return him to rescue.
3.) We have decided to hold off on any more adoptions until we have a better way to protect the adopted dogs. We have several people reviewing our adoption contracts to ensure this never happens to another animal again. This has been a horrific experience for all involved. There were several people that played a role in Chevy’s life and getting him out of the animal shelter including the director, the staff, his advocate, the transport drivers, and of course everyone who came into contact with him here at the rescue. We are all devastated and worried about Chevys well being.

4/28/25 MORNING UPDATE: there is no update. I have not been contacted again by the adopter or her husband since the last text message on 4.26.25.
I am not advocating for anyone to go on their property.
The Sheriffs Department has been made aware.
The Animal Control officers have been made aware.
Without releasing too much information I can assure you all LEGAL action is being taken.
Please continue to share and tag veterinarians who may be asked, or have already been asked, to euthanize Chevy and Trainers who may be in posession of him. So far we have had nobody come forward from a training facility stating they have him in training.
There is nobody more concerned about Chevy than me - trust me- this dog spent more time here with me than he has with his new family.

A PLEA FOR CHEVY ‼️ PLEASE SHARE ‼️
- Chevy arrived in our rescue from a shelter on 2.14.25
- On 3.29.25 he was adopted by a family in the Bluffton Hilton Head Area.
- On 4.25.25 at 9:00pm I received this text from the adopter:
“I wanted to let you know as good as his “base” personality is, we’ve had some problems with Chevy nipping at a few of our friends (all male). We had him scheduled to start training Tuesday. This evening he lunged at and bit our friends 3 year old. Thank God my husband was there or it could have been truly horrific”
It is our policy here at SCSN that we always take our dogs back. It is a requirement of you do not intend to keep the dog. This is both stated in our adopton application, adoption contract and discussed with EVERYONE at the meet and greet.
Chevy had received vet care both at the shelter and at rescue (He was neutered here) and had never had any issue with aggression towards the humans handling him. Until 4.25.25 we had not been made aware Chevy was having any issues whatsoever in his new home.
I asked when they’d like to return him and the adopter stated “we were thinking of going to the vet Monday and putting him to sleep”. (All screenshots of texts included)
I requested he be picked up immediately by one of our drivers. She said she needed to talk to her husband.
As of 12:03pm yesterday (4.26.25) I have not gotten any response from the adopter. Her last message was “We found a trainer to take him”.
After more digging I was made aware that the adopter had Chevy evaluated by a trainer on 4.14.25 and signed up for future classes. The owner of the company stated to me yesterday that his trainer who did the assesment said Chevy had “absolutely no forward aggression”.
The adopter emailed the Trainer at 9:30pm the same evening she messaged me (4.25.25) and cancelled training stating “Hunter (Chevy) has bit several people today including a small child".
When asked if the bites had been reported she said they had not.
Chevy had been in this home for under a month and had been put into what sounds like several situations where he was improperly introduced to visitors and not allowed the standard time to decompress.
We are desperately asking that if you are a Veterinarian in the Lowcountry or surrounding area and this dog is brought in for Behavioral Euthanasia- please don’t do it. PLEASE CONTACT ME IMMEDIATELY!
If you are a trainer and have been given this dog PLEASE CONTACT ME IMMEDIATELY! He is not to be rehomed or euthanized as per our adoption contract the adopter signed.
If you have any information regarding the “Bites”Chevy was involvedved in, Id love to speak to you to fully understand what happened. PLEASE CONTACT ME IMMEDIATELY!
Chevy is microchipped and registered to the Rescue, the adopter never registered it to herself.
We have been in contact with Beaufort County Sheriff's Office and Beaufort County Animal Services.
We want nothing more than to have Chevy returned back to rescue so we can evaluate his behavior and move forward from there.
