Scotch Plains Fanwood Scholarship Foundation

In November 2017, my friends and family suddenly lost someone very dear to us all, John Maggs.  John was a committed visual artist who did all of his work by hand and veered off the beaten path to attend the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art to pursue his dream.  He was an amazing friend who was always present, warm, humble, and generous. He was a loving brother and son who adored his family and gave all of himself. John left us suddenly and far too early, but those who love him have made a commitment to keep his spirit alive, both in our hearts and in the form of a visual arts scholarship to help graduating SPFHS seniors pursue their dreams.

Everyone mobilized so quickly that in May 2018, I had the pleasure of awarding our first John J. Maggs Memorial Arts Scholarship to graduating senior Ryan Midwinter who was heading to FIT.   In May 2019,  we were able to deliver this award again to Raina Jablon, who headed to Drexel University to pursue film studies -- one of John's favorite pastimes (film studies loosely defined, of course).   After meeting both recipients and hearing SPFHS faculty sing their praises, I think John would have been proud to lend his name in support of their budding careers.

Whether you knew John or not, if you're seeing this, you know someone who was affected by John.  I hope that you will consider making a donation to John’s legacy, to help another young artist pursue their dream.
