Save King's Beach Built a Lab!
Quick Story: Save King's Beach has created a lab to do its own beach water quality testing! This summer, we hired an intern from Northeastern and built a lab at Nahant Beach. Can you spare $20 (tax-deductible!) to cover the cost of running one test at our lab and support scientific research of water quality in our beloved Nahant Bay?
Long Story: Nahant Long Beach saw its worst year on record in 2024. Some tests even "maxed out" the testing number of 24,200 Colony Forming Units (CFUs); the safe limit is 104 CFUs. Save King's Beach collected over 800 signatures and attempted to advocate for the state Department of Conservation Resources (DCR) to test Nahant daily for summer 2025, but transitioning leadership at DCR got in the way of our efforts.
So for the first time ever, Save King's Beach has hired a master's student and teamed up with Northeastern University to create a lab. Our intern and SKB volunteers will be conducting water quality testing at Nahant Long Beach to better understand 'what's going on' at Nahant. The goal of the study is to explore:
- what Nahant water quality tests like on a daily, as opposed to its currently weekly basis as its currently tested by the state;
- if rainfall affects Nahant Beach water quality,
- if there is a correlation between algae present and water quality,
- if/where pollution seems to be concentrated along the beach, and
- if the neighboring UV pilot at King's beach seems to have a positive effect on Nahant Long Beach (pending additional funding)
How you can help:
Our estimated cost for the 5-week study is about $6,000 to cover the cost of testing materials plus paying our amazing intern.
Each test costs about $20, and there are five testing locations along Nahant Long Beach and Lynn Shore Beach. If you've appreciated the work that our organization has done pro-bono for the North Shore for the past four years, we would GREATLY appreciate you sponsoring a test to support our work. If you can, a $100 donation covers all lab testing costs for 1 day of research. All donations are tax-deductible through our fiscal sponsor, Save the Harbor, Save the Bay.
Thank you for your support and generosity,
Andrea Amour, Founder, along with Save King's Beach Leadership
