My name is Hannah, and I am a veterinarian. I spent 7 months as the on-site veterinarian at Sanaga Yong Chimpanzee Rescue in Cameroon, West Africa and had the privilege of taking care of the veterinary needs of 80 chimpanzees. I will return again in September 2025 for 6 months.
Whilst I was there, Cecile (who is featured in the cover photo) became critically unwell, and was diagnosed with an abscess on her colon by ultrasound. She had to undergo two surgeries to remove the abscessed section of colon, and to break down masses of adhesions in her abdomen. She is alive today because of the veterinary facilities and equipment such as the ultrasound machine at the sanctuary. Veterinary equipment is expensive to buy, import and maintain.
Unfortunately, an important component of the x-ray machine at the sanctuary has failed, and needs to be replaced. It will cost around $8500 USD. X-ray machines are crucial in diagnosing bone fractures, tooth root problems, heart and lung conditions, and problems within the abdomen. My aim is to raise as much money as possible towards getting the x-ray machine back up and running, to help more chimpanzees like Cecile in their time of need.
Thank you in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.
