SLO Community Ice Rink: Let’s Build It!
The development of a community ice rink in San Luis Obispo represents a transformative opportunity for our region. A comprehensive feasibility study has already been completed in partnership with Cal Poly, confirming both demand and viability. Several sponsors have expressed strong interest, and multiple potential parcels of land with appropriate zoning have been evaluated. The concept has been formally presented to the San Luis Obispo City Council, which has encouraged continued momentum and broader community support prior to considering any matching funds.
The project team remains open to additional sites in the 8–10 acre range, with approximately 1.5 acres allocated for the rink facility itself and roughly 7 acres dedicated to parking to support larger events and peak attendance.
This project would serve an estimated 300,000 residents across San Luis Obispo County, providing children and families with an exciting new recreational outlet while fostering hockey, figure skating, and speed skating. Designed as a flexible, multi-use facility, the ice rink would also function as a concert venue and convention space, delivering cultural, recreational, and economic benefits year-round. With strong groundwork already in place, this project is well-positioned to become a lasting community asset that inspires participation, strengthens community ties, and energizes the Central Coast.
