Hola, I am Darlene Tenes, founder of the Farmworker Caravan and I am asking you to donate $150 to sponsor one agricultural worker to attend our Conference and Dia de Alegria Retreat May 18-20, 2024 at Saint Francis Retreat Center in San Juan Bautista, CA.

On Saturday the education is geared to the needs of agricultural workers including immigration laws, labor rights, sexual abuse and domestic violence classes.

On Sunday, farmworker families and conference attendees are invited to attend Dia de Alegria, a one-day retreat where invited guests will be able to relax, reflect and rejuvenate their spirits through arts, music, health and fitness activities. There will also be a Mass and Brunch with Mariachi Azteca and BBQ Pachanga with Los Amigos salsa and cumbia band.

On Monday the conference will convene CBOs, service providers, government organizations, community leaders and agricultural workers to share resources, gain knowledge and imagine innovative ways to uplift the agricultural community and make a significant impact on farmworkers and their families’ lives.

The Farmworker Caravan and The Franciscans will cover 50% of the cost of the conference and retreat for farmworkers. We need you to sponsor:

The Farmworker Caravan is asking for your support to purchase a van. How can we be a caravan without a vehicle? All year around Farmworker Caravan provides support to agricultural communities through:

Our nonprofit partner, Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County has provided an immense amount of support to us in having their transportation pick up and drop off donations in their vans. They have graciously agreed to allow us to add a Farmworker Caravan van to their fleet to help us continue to serve our agricultural community. We will continue to use their drivers and storage when needed and they will insure and maintain the vehicle as part of their fleet. We would also love to get the vehicle wrapped with our logo and graphics.

Hello, I am Darlene Tenes, the founder of the Farmworker Caravan. The last time I wrote a Farmworker Caravan newsletter it was entitled "Good News" as we were preparing to deliver thousands of tamales and Christmas stockings to farmworkers in Half Moon Bay where our first stop was at the mushroom farm (shown in the picture above). This was the same farm with families and children that we had just visited at Christmas to deliver tamales and goods. Sadly, the children witnessed the shootings.

The agricultural community is always under a tremendous amount of daily stress before this tragedy and the recent floods have added another level of anxiety with untold consequences at this point. Then the tragic mass shooting today in Half Moon Bay.

We have been in touch with all of our partner agencies who have been overwhelmed with dealing with emergency services for both shooting and flood victims.

Now that the skies have cleared they will begin cleaning and evaluating the damages and then make an assessment of the needs. Please keep all those affected in your hearts and prayers.

The funds donated will be dispersed to our partner agencies and used for emergency services to support the 40 families affected by the Half Moon Bay shooting and the hundreds of farmworker families who have lost everything and have no work because of the flooded fields. This is a huge disaster. Pajaro is an extremely poor farming community. These people have lost everything and they already had nothing. Many of them are living in substandard housing with no insurance. They will have to start of from scratch again and now they are out of work. More information will be added soon...

On Saturday we will bring together nonprofit, private and government agencies, legislators, growers and farmworkers to discuss and learn from each other about what is happening in the industry. We have invited 20 farmworker leaders to speak directly with politicians, nonprofit and community leaders in an intimate setting to share the challenges, needs and stories from their community. On Sunday, Campesinas en Paz will focus on a one-day retreat, open to all female farmworkers to relax, refresh, reflect and rejuvenate their spirit. Our goal is to provide a space for these leaders to become stronger advocates, service providers and leaders in Farmworker Equity. See Agenda

We visit agricultural housing camps in multiple counties.  These appreciation events have food, entertainment, gifts and essential needs as well as provide onsite immigration, education and health and wellnesss services.

HOLIDAY EVENTS

Farmworker Caravan volunteers rally year-round during our Summer Toy Drive, Santa’s Workshops & Christmas con Cariño Campaign delivering thousands of toys, stockings and gifts to multiple partner agencies in 8 counties.

EMERGENCY SUPPORT

The Farmworker Caravan has been on the ground in less than 24 hours to support workers during disasters such as the Half Moon Bay Shooting, Pajara Levy Break & Central Coast Flooding, Wild Fires and other emergencies without hesitation.
