One in four children in San Antonio does not know where their next meal is coming from. That number is honestly heartbreaking, especially when you think about how many kids in our own community rely on school breakfast and lunch just to get through the day.
When summer arrives, those meals disappear and families are left trying to fill a massive twenty million meal gap. Texas is now ranked second in the nation for food insecurity, and the impact of that is felt right here at home. This is not just about food. It is about stability, confidence, and giving kids the chance to focus on being kids instead of worrying about whether they will eat tonight.
Teachers see this every single day. One ESL teacher, Mrs. Schmelter, shared something that stayed with me. She said, “I teach English, but I also teach confidence. And food is part of that foundation. A child who eats is a child who believes they can succeed.”
When a child has enough to eat, everything changes. They show up with more energy. They participate more. They laugh more. They dream bigger. Educators like Mrs. Schmelter work so hard to keep their students supported through food drives, community partnerships, and their own commitment to making sure no child is held back by their circumstances.
That is why Kids Cafe is so important.
Kids Cafe provides after school meals, healthy snacks, and a safe place for children who need support the most. But many neighborhoods with the highest need still do not have consistent access to programs like this. This fundraiser helps Kids Cafe reach more children and offer steady nourishment, encouragement, and a place where they can feel cared for.
Your donation helps provide healthy after school meals, safe and reliable spaces during the hours kids need support the most, and enrichment activities that keep them engaged and learning. It also helps fill the huge meal gap when school cafeterias close for the summer.
Every single contribution matters. You are not only helping provide food. You are offering comfort, stability, and the chance for a child to focus on learning and simply being a kid.
Thank you for caring about these children and for being part of something that truly makes a difference in their future.
