The situation in East Ghouta is extremely dire. Currently, nearly 400,000 civilians are besieged in the area, including more than 130,000 children. Since 2012, civilians have faced frequent aerial attacks and shelling. Hospitals, market places, schools, and other civilian areas have been targeted with impunity. In August 2013, 1,200 civilians were killed in a Sarin gas attack perpetrated by the Syrian government.


It is 2018, and it hasn’t stopped. In the last 36 hours, over 300 Syrians were killed including women and children, and hundreds more are injured in Eastern Ghouta.


Children in East Ghouta pay a disproportionate price for the “starve or kneel” tactic that has been used throughout Syria since the beginning of the Syrian conflict. Currently, more than 13,000 children in East Ghouta are in dire need of medical care. The malnutrition ratio has skyrocketed from 2.1% to 11.9 % since the beginning of 2017, the highest seen throughout the Syrian conflict. The proportion of malnutrition in childrenunder 24 months is higher than other age group

Chronic food and medicine shortages have devastated Eastern Ghouta with severe cases of malnutrition. Children in East Ghouta pay a disproportionate price for the “starve or kneel” tactic that has been used throughout Syria since the beginning of the Syrian conflict. Currently, more than 13,000 children in East Ghouta are in dire need of medical care. The malnutrition ratio has skyrocketed from 2.1% to 11.9 % since the beginning of 2017, the highest seen throughout the Syrian conflict. The proportion of malnutrition in children under 24 months is higher than other age group.

The regime has been targeting and bombing many medical centers. According to the Syrian American Medical Society, they are running out of medical assistance and places to put these people because at least 22 facilities, have been targeted since Sunday.

My Name is Hussein Moursy and I run marathons to raise money for refugees. I wasn't planning on raising any money for my next race because it was on such short notice, but after seeing what has been happening in Eastern Ghouta and their dire need for medical supplies and aid, I couldn't sit by and just watch.
