Who We Are
I’m Claudia Wheeler, a proud veteran and the founder of SALT Foundation Inc. For over 17 years, I’ve dedicated my life to rescuing surplus food, fighting hunger, and building stronger, more sustainable communities. I believe that no one should have to choose between paying bills and putting food on the table—especially when so much food is thrown away daily.
SALT works tirelessly to collect fresh, unused food from local supermarkets and farms, keeping it out of landfills and delivering it to families in need. But we need your help to do more!
The Problem
Right now, our biggest challenge is transportation. Without a dedicated vehicle, we can’t rescue as much food as we know is available. Just last month, we had to turn down over 7,000 pounds of fresh food simply because we couldn’t transport it. That’s food that could have nourished families but instead went to waste. With a reliable van, we can rescue more, waste less, and feed more people.
A Personal Story: The Faces of Hunger
At every food giveaway, I see the same truth: hunger doesn’t have just one face. The line isn’t just made up of the unemployed or the homeless—it includes hardworking people who simply can’t make ends meet.
I’ve met parents who work full-time but still struggle to put fresh food on the table. Seniors on fixed incomes who have to choose between medicine and groceries. College students trying to survive on part-time wages.
One father told me:
“I work 40 hours a week, but after rent and bills, there’s barely anything left for food. This program helps me feed my kids without feeling ashamed.”
This is why we do what we do. Rescuing food doesn’t just fight waste—it fights the silent struggles of families who are doing their best but still falling short.
