Join us in making a difference! We are asking friends, family, community members and humans around the world to help fund our Rotary Club of Arcata Sunrise Community Foundation project.

For our project we will build a home for a family of Mayan decent in Guatemala.  The indigenous Mayan people are in the lowest Caste of the Guatemalan Caste system.  They have inadequate access to jobs and are the most poorly educated.  Most live in shacks made of branches, tree trunks, barrels with plastic sheeting or cloth for walls, and dirt floors.  We will select a family to donate our house to and when it is complete, we will give it to the woman of the family as her property.  Receiving a home raises the woman and her family several Caste rungs.   This affords her family better access to jobs and education, and protects women and children from being treated as property.

The projects range from small local hands-on projects to large multi-organizational projects in developing countries. Our motto, "Service Above Self", has been the underlying strength of our club and its members for over twenty years. The future of Humboldt State athletics is in danger and it needs your help. Due to declining enrollment at the university, the Athletics Department is facing a funding shortfall and is considering cutting football to balance the budget. If football goes, women’s teams will need to be cut, which means potentially more than 160 opportunities for young men and women would be lost … and we all know that other sports will not be far behind. If we can demonstrate, yet again, how committed we are to Humboldt State Athletics and all the good it can do for the lives of young people, then we can ensure that Lumberjack sports will survive this budget crunch and be around for the next generation. 

We are calling on community members, business owners, and all HSU Alumni and Athletic Alumni for support. We need to raise $500,000 this year and on an ongoing basis to save the program. If we can hit this threshold, the university has assured us that it will contribute any additional funds necessary to keep all current sports at the university in-tact.

Football and all athletics are a community driver and economic power house in Humboldt County. Many of us owe our careers to connections we made while playing for the Jacks. Some met their spouses and began families as a result of taking part in athletics at Humboldt State. And there’s just something magical about being among the crowds of people, young and old, surrounded by the Redwood trees and cheering on our Jacks. If we lost that, we would lose more than any individual sport. We would lose a piece of our community and our history that we would never get back.
