Vidya's campaign for Rise Up Against Racism, Inc
There have been many events this year that show that racism not only exists across the country, but right here in our community. Like many of you, I feel like the conversations we are having around race are a good start, but there is still a lot of work to be done. I believe that one place to start is through education.
As a part of my commitment to this issue, I have signed up to be a steward of a Little Free Antiracist Library through Rise Up Against Racism and to have it installed in front of my home on Balboa Avenue (I am open to suggestions to having it placed where the community thinks is best.) The organization purchases all of the books from Marcus Bookstore, America’s oldest black-owned bookstore, in Oakland, and commissions local Black artists to turn them into functional pieces of community art (see picture below).
The goal of the Antiracist Book Initiative is to bring the community together, create a space for vital conversations about antiracism, and ensure that both children and adults have ready access to books that elevate Black voices and inspire us all to understand and actively dismantle racism.
As we approach Giving Tuesday, I am writing this message to ask that we join together to show that we as a community stand against racism and help raise $4,000 to have the library installed. This contribution also includes Little Free Antiracist library to a partner community through Rise Up Against Racism’s CARE Program where they identify under-resourced communities and partner with them to construct a Little Free Antiracist Library.
