Deep in the heart of the Amazon rainforest lives Mapulu Kamayurá, the first female shaman in the history of her people.

For generations, only men were allowed to hold the sacred role of pajé — spiritual healer and guide. But Mapulu changed that forever.

At just 13 years old, Mapulu fell into a mysterious coma that lasted three months. During that time, she says the spirits of the forest visited her, teaching her the ancient knowledge of healing and the sacred traditions of her ancestors. When she awoke, she knew her life had changed — and so had the future of her people.

Despite resistance from her own father, a powerful shaman who believed women could not hold this role, Mapulu followed her calling. Today she is a healer, a leader, and a symbol of Indigenous women rising into positions of spiritual and cultural leadership.

Her story is extraordinary — and now it is becoming a film.

A Film That Will Bring Mapulu’s Story to the World

For the past five years, our team has been documenting Mapulu’s journey in a cinematic film called “Mapulu: The First Shaman.”

The film blends documentary and mystical reenactments to bring viewers into the spiritual world of the Kamayurá people — a world rarely seen by outsiders. It reveals the beauty of their culture, the power of ancestral healing traditions, and the courage of a woman who changed history.

The project is co-produced by filmmakers behind the award-winning We Are Guardians impact campaign, which has helped mobilize global support for Indigenous forest guardians in the Amazon.

Our goal is to bring Mapulu’s story to the hearts of millions of people around the world — inspiring respect for Indigenous wisdom and the forests that sustain our planet.

But this story is not just a film.

It is also about a real community that needs support right now.

A New Village Built by Women

Recently, Mapulu founded a new village called Hiulaya, a matriarchal community where she lives with her family and her people.

Hiulaya represents a powerful vision:

a place where women can lead spiritually, culturally, and politically.

But the village is still new and vulnerable.

Right now the community is facing very basic challenges:

No reliable access to clean drinking water

No sanitation system

No reliable transportation for emergencies

The Xingu River, which once provided pure water for the community, is now increasingly polluted by agricultural runoff and mining upstream. Clean water has become an urgent need.

Mapulu has been working tirelessly to build a future for her people — but she cannot do it alone.

The Amazon Rainforest stands as an irreplaceable force of climate stabilization and biodiversity. Today, however, this ecological treasure sits at the edge of disaster. In the past five decades, the Amazon has lost a devastating 20% of its once-pristine cover, teetering on the edge of a dangerous tipping point that’s already begun to transform its southern edge into a dry savannah. This year, after an unprecedented drought that dried rivers to historic lows and killed off large populations of river dolphins and fish, the area is experiencing some of the worst fires and smoke it has ever had.

The new film, We Are Guardians, follows Indigenous leader and activist Puyr Tembé and forest guardian Marçal Guajajara as they fight to protect their territories from the ongoing encroachment of illegal loggers, invaders, and fires from large-scale agriculture. View the trailer

The Tembé and Guajajara communities featured in the film are situated on the easternmost deforested edge of the Amazon in the Alto Rio Guamá and Arariboia territories. These areas play a pivotal role in regional climate dynamics. The weather patterns originating here affect the entire Amazon basin. The trees of the Amazon act as a giant water pump, pulling water from the Atlantic ocean and circulating it across the continent, hitting the Andes mountains and flowing back again up to six times in massive aerial rivers. This moisture is necessary for the topical tree species to survive. When more and more trees are cut, the pump is less strong, which causes more trees to die off and become more susceptible to climate change. Functioning properly, the Amazon is a giant air conditioner and climate stabilizer. Without it, climate changes are more severe, as we are seeing now with the devastating flooding in Rio Grande do Sul in the South of Brazil. Because the Alto Rio Guamá and Arariboia are on the eastern edge of the Amazon, they are the first areas to pump moisture from the ocean and will slow the drying of the rest of the Amazon basin if they can be protected and regenerated.

These communities have requested help in preserving their remaining forests, reforesting damaged areas, and helping them establish a regenerative economy for sustained autonomy. We can make a substantial difference by working hand-in-hand with them to help protect these precious ecosystems and support these important forests communities.

The new film We Are Guardians follows Indigenous leader and activist Puyr Tembé and forest guardian Marçal Guajajara as they fight to protect their territories from the ongoing encroachment of illegal loggers and invaders. These Guardians have immediate needs to continue their work, such as equipment, resources and training. Your donations will help support the direct needs of these Forest Guardians. We will transfer the funds from our fiscal sponsor straight to our campaign leaders Puyr Tembé and Edivan Guajajara to dispense to their communities.

The Tembé territory of Alto Rio Guamá is located in the Brazilian state of Pará, on the southern edge of the Amazon. Nearly 3,000 square kilometers in size, the Alto Rio Guamá Territory is one of the most threatened Indigenous territories in Brazil and continuously faces pressure from an onslaught of illegal logging and ranching. The Tembé forest guardians make routine surveillance missions of their land on foot, by motorcycle, and by boat, but they need support in the form of radios, drones, fuel for transportation, solar panels for their strategic bases throughout the territory, and additional gear such as sturdy boots and backpacks to continue their work.

The Guajajara territory of Araribóia is located further south in the Brazilian state of Maranhão. At the edge of the Amazonian and Cerrado biomes, Araribóia is also incredibly threatened by illegal loggers and has seen a significant decrease in its forest health over the last 30 years. At over 4,000 square kilometers, it is a huge undertaking for the guardians to survey their territory and therefore they need extra support for fuel, communication devices such as radios, food on multi-day missions, and tools such as machetes for missions into the jungle.

Donations will also help support Indigenous Guardians and their efforts to make their voices heard at demonstrations in Brazil's capital city.
