Pedal Route 66 - 2,443 Miles To Get Kids On Bikes
My name is Michael Herman and I’m from Doylestown Pennsylvania.
Bikes have always been my passion. As a teenager and into my early 20’s I was obsessed with BMX. After school and on weekends I could be found riding trails, street or anywhere we could ride and not get chased out by the authorities. It was just about having fun with my friends and being outside. Everyone at that age was so obsessed with getting their driver’s license, but I didn’t care. My bikes where my first freedom. I could go as far as my legs would take me.
After seeing some unflattering pictures of myself from a wedding in 2019 I told myself, “That’s enough.” I needed to do something about my health. I knew that if I was going to make a real change in my life, I was going to have find something that I would stick with. I’ve had gym memberships all over town, and “Eating better” was never going to be enough.
In late 2019, I made the decided that I needed to dust off the bikes and get back what I was missing all those years. I dusted off my bikes, and set out to reclaim my lost passion.
After watching a documentary of a group of friends who bike toured across the United States, I thought to myself, “I wish I could do that.”
Well, I am...
In Spring of 2020 I’ll be riding the entire length of Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica, California. The 2,448 mile ride (288 miles longer than the Tour de France) will be done over a period of around 30 days. We will be filming a documentary that will be released over a number of “Episodes” online in the weeks after we return home. The purpose of the ride is for me to try and show the audience what bike have done to motivate me and hopefully inspire others to get out on bikes as well. My goal is to raise $100,000 for the non-profit organization RADshare .
In addition to this I have created my website Pedal66 and will be doing fundraising for RADshare there and will leave the videos live on YouTube forever in hope to continue to collect donations for them.
Bikes kept me active, out of trouble and allowed me the headspace to put aside whatever was on my mind. I’d love it if I could help RADshare raise money to help kids get on bikes and hopefully find the outlet that I was fortunate enough to have as a kid.
Thanks for anything you can contribute!
