7 plus 1…No Safety Net: Save the Toolbox Kitties
Last week, 20 cats were pulled from a hoarding situation in Columbia County, Florida. They were facing euthanasia by Saturday.
Three small rescues stepped up. Purradise Springs took 7 — the ones in the worst shape. We’re calling them the Toolbox Kitties.
Meet them:
Wobbles — being evaluated for cerebellar hypoplasia. Needs a spay.
Ponch — just got neutered. Needs vaccines.
Scratch — sweet soul, still healing before his neuter.
Betsy — came in already spayed and vaccinated. Needs a full eval.
Jon Silver — just got neutered. Facing an eye evaluation and possible enucleation.
Holly — also facing an eye evaluation and possible enucleation. Needs a spay.
Shadow — the owner’s own cat. Already spayed, needs vaccines and a microchip.
And then there’s Martini — not from the hoarding case, but a cat found alone in a parking lot right before the Toolbox Kitties arrived. She can’t bear weight on her back leg and may need an amputation or major reconstructive surgery.
That’s 8 cats in urgent need of medical care in less than two weeks.
We’ve already spent close to $1,000 out of pocket just to get started. Donations so far have barely covered a fraction of that.
There is no local safety net for cats in Columbia County right now. The Lake City Humane Society just lost its city and county funding. There are no local programs supporting cats. It’s small rescues like us — running on love, duct tape, and donations — doing this work.
We weren’t in a position to take these cats. But no one else was stepping up, and the clock was ticking. We know we can’t save them all. But we couldn’t do nothing.
Our goal: $2,000 to cover the most urgent surgeries and medical care.
Every dollar goes directly to vet bills. Purradise Springs is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. No one here takes a salary. We run a cat sanctuary and glamping retreat on 9 acres in Fort White, and every cent of what we earn and receive goes back to the cats.
$20 covers a vaccine. $50 covers bloodwork. $200 saves an eye. Whatever you can give matters.
