Change Children’s Lives ONE BIKE AT A TIME
THIS HOLIDAY SEASON, Help Us Change Children’s Lives, ONE BIKE AT A TIME

This holiday season with the help of our supporters we are raising money to get these 4 NICU graduates their very own adaptive bikes. There is no better holiday gift than the freedom of mobility. Please join us in changing lives one bike at a time.

Our adaptive bikes mean the world to our recipients, but they’re just the start of the high-cost things they need. That’s why we’re partnering with The Funding Project, a charity started by Hal’s sister Tammy. Learn more about The Funding Project below.

Jaxon is a 10-year-old who weighed just 1 lb., 15 oz. when he was born at 24 weeks gestation. He spent three years in the NICU, and though his parents were told to let him go after multiple codes and complications, today he can walk. His parents say an adaptive bike would let him ride with his sister and help his range of motion and coordination. READ MORE

Andy is a 5-year-old boy born at 29 weeks. After 43 days in the NICU fighting lung infections and anemia, he finally went home, but his parents noticed he wasn’t hitting his milestones. He was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy when he was 2.5

years old, and at age 4 he was diagnosed with the most severe form of Autism Spectrum Disorder. READ MORE

Mya is a 4-year-old born at 24 weeks. Nominated for a bike by her speech-language pathologist, Mya has Cerebral Palsy and other medical issues, but is still “one of the sassiest and most fashionable 4-year-olds you’ll ever meet.” Her SLP says Mya’s two older brothers adore her and would love to be able to go on a bike ride with her. Mia was born weighing 3 lbs., 4 oz. She had a heart defect, epilepsy, hearing loss, and many other issues. She’s had six surgeries in total —her first heart surgery was at 2 weeks old. Despite her challenges, this 4-year-old is thriving. She loves to go on fast rides, loves to swim and bike and camp, and has a little sister who she adores. READ MORE

The Ultimate Present this Holiday Season - 2022
Riding a bike is a rite of passage for a child, think back...remember when you were a child and the joy you felt when you rode your bike for the first time with the training wheels off, the excitement you felt when you got off your bike and ran to mom and dad yelling I did it, I did it!

This is why we do what we do. We want to give that feeling to children with disabilities who might not have gotten to experience that joy. Last year with your help we were able to give adaptive bikes to 6 children battling cancer thanks to our generous supporters.

Please consider donating this holiday season to help us further our mission one bike at a time.

We have had quite a successful year thanks to our amazing supporters and donors and we want to keep it going through the Holiday season.

To see where your dollar goes, check out what we accomplished this year:

In 2022, we provided 4 Adaptive Cycling Clinics through our Veterans Cycling Initiative. They were held at VA Medical Centers throughout the Midwest. Our goal was to get injured service members off the couch or out of the hospital & onto a bike. We helped over 120 wounded veterans get back on a bike after their injuries.

We also provided our Adaptive Bike Days for children at hospitals, schools & therapy centers. This is the first time most of these children experienced riding an adaptive bike, even if it is just for a day.

Lastly, so far this year we have given 12 bikes away through our Adaptive Bike Giveaway. We were able to give the freedom of mobility to Cooper (8), Laith (9), Jacob (12), Gabriel (9), Theo (5), Liberty (13), Henry (7), Matthew (3), Bryce (11), Joshua (16), Logan (7) and David (8). These children all had some type of special need. They were born with some type of disability, autism, cancer to gunshot victims.

Donations help us continue providing the freedom of mobility to children, adults and wounded soldiers with disabilities. Please consider helping us this holiday season.

A bit of background about Project Mobility:

We were formed as a nonprofit organization in 2002 by Hal Honeyman. Hal’s son is a triplet born 3 months premature and ended up with Cerebral Palsy. This set Hal on a mission to find a way for his son Jacob to ride a bike with his family.

Hal did just that, he found a bike that Jacob could ride. What started out as a mission to get Jacob a bike over 20 years ago has changed the lives of thousands of children, adults, and wounded veterans with disabilities.

Riding a bike may sound like such a simple activity, but to those with mobility challenges (along with a hefty price tag) it makes it nearly impossible for them to enjoy the freedom of mobility without our help.

These specialized bikes create a sense of freedom for someone with a disability. Our bikes restore a sense of possibility and ability to those who are often told by society that their life is about limitations.

We help change that, but we can only do that with your help!

Help 6 Children with Cancer - HABG 2021

The inspiration behind this year’s Holiday Adaptive Bike Giveaway is a little boy named Riley. In 2016 Riley was a recipient of Project Mobility's Adaptive Bike Giveaway at our Annual Golf Outing, Everybody Golfs. His mom told us that the time he had with his adaptive bike was the best time of his life.

Unfortunately, in 2018 Riley lost his battle with brain cancer at only 8 years old. He was the first child we had given the freedom of mobility to with cancer and his bravery will live on forever. Riley is now helping these 6 children with their mobility dreams.

For those that follow Project Mobility you may be wondering why we are helping children with cancer. You might not think they need an adaptive bike, but the treatments for pediatric cancers include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy and sometimes a combination of many. These treatments can result in a loss of function including balance, cognition, endurance, mobility, vision, and so much more. Some children even have strokes and secondary cancers. Because of these issues they may no longer be able to ride that two wheeled bike they may already have at home. Some of these children go from walking one day to only being able to get around in the wheelchair the next. Cancer steals their mobility and we want to get it back for them but we need your help!

These young children have had so many aspects of their life taken away. Every child deserves to ride a bike with their family and friends. They deserve to have this part of their pre-cancer life back and with your help we can make this happen.

Riley's Story

"Riley was only 4 years old when he was diagnosed with aggressive brain and spinal cancer, called Pineoblastoma, in January of 2014. He had 3 brain tumors as well as spinal tumors. Prior to his diagnosis, he suffered from fatigue, early morning nausea and vomiting, headaches, and mobility issues. Riley endured 31 days of intense proton radiation to his entire brain and spine, and then 6 cycles of high dose, inpatient chemotherapy. Towards the end of radiation, he slowly lost his ability to walk. He ended up doing inpatient rehabilitation at RIC in Chicago in between his chemotherapy cycles, but never regained his ability to walk. At the end of treatment Riley was declared “stable” as the tumors had shrunk and he no longer had any more masses.

Unfortunately, in June of 2016, another tumor had grown in his brain, and Riley officially relapsed. During this time, Riley received additional intensive OT, PT, and Speech Therapy services. He learned to crawl, but never was able to walk again. A friend reached out and shared that Project Mobility was having an Adaptive Bike Give Away Contest and that we should fill out the application. I wrote up Riley’s story and how important it would be for Riley and for our family, for Riley to regain some freedom of movement that he had lost and to just be a kid again and ride bikes with his older brother. The contest had 3 contestants. Unfortunately, Riley was too sick to attend the luncheon to announce the winner, but we received a phone call that all 3 kids were gifted bikes. I was in complete tears. Riley, his older brother Aidan, and I, went to The Bike Rack and got to see Riley’s beautiful, adaptive, and purple bike. It was the most amazing experience! Riley got on that bike and took off. His smile and laugh was priceless. He rode around the whole store and there was no stopping him! We will be forever grateful to The Bike Rack and Project Mobility for Riley’s adaptive bike. He was able to ride his bike with his brother and enjoy life during those moments.

Unfortunately, Riley lost his battle with brain cancer on March 19th, 2018, after a second relapse. He was the sweetest boy and touched the hearts of everyone he met. He will be forever missed. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Project Mobility for reaching out, sharing Riley’s story, and helping other children with cancer. Cancer steals the lives of these little children and takes so much away from them, including their mobility. We will forever treasure and remember those special moments when Riley would ride his bike and I would have to run chasing him just to catch up.

Holiday Adaptive Bike Giveaway 2020
WE ARE BACK AT IT AGAIN!

Project Mobility’s Holiday Adaptive Bike Giveaway is an extension of our Adaptive Bike Giveaway. It began in 2009 with a 10 year old girl named Riley. Her mom was looking to buy her husband a bicycle at The Bike Rack and came across the Hallmark Heroes video. She didn’t know that Riley was behind her watching the video too. She turned around and saw Riley with tears in her eyes and she said “Mom I’m going to get a bike like that for a child this Christmas”. Her mom explained these bikes are very expensive and asked her how she was going to do that. Riley decided to write a letter and send it to the family’s Christmas card list. Riley explained, “I wrote a letter to everybody I knew and tons of people sent in checks, so I got three bikes! I helped three kid’s Christmas wishes come true!”

Once CBS News found out about Riley’s mission they aired a story and shortly after donations started coming in from across the country! Ever since 2009, we have taken Riley’s amazing work and kept it going. Without your support we cannot make the dreams come true for these children. Help us keep the tradition going!

Adaptive Bike Giveaway 2019
WE ARE BACK AT IT AGAIN!

Another successful Adaptive Bike Giveaway Facebook Contest occurred at this year's Everybody Rides Presented by ALDI on September 15th!

Our Facebook contest is where someone with a disability could win an adaptive bike valued between $4,000 and $5,000 donated by a very generous company, Freedom Concepts.

It was so emotional to read all 12 stories of these amazing kids that entered the Adaptive Bike Giveaway and only be able to help 1. They have all been through so much in their young lives, that each and every single one of them deserve for us to bring them the freedom of mobility.

The Facebook post was seen by over 270,000 people and almost 11,000 people were engaged with 2,200 shares.

You might be asking what you can do to help another child in the contest get a bike.

Just think about this:
If EVERY SINGLE person that read, liked or shared the original post had DONATED just $1.00 to Project Mobility we would have raised over a quarter of a million dollars! That could help SO MANY kids get an adaptive bike.

Henry was the winner of Project Mobility's Adaptive Bike Giveaway 2019 and we were so excited to announce at the event that thanks to the generosity of ALDI, a few local businesses and individuals we were also able to give adaptive bikes to Liam, Levi and Camp Courageous.

Now we need your help to give the remaining 8 children the freedom of mobility!

Help Teens with Disabilities Get a Ride
Hearing that he didn't win an adaptive bike contest, we have set up a campaign to help Scott Curtiss get his 'ride.'

That's were you can help !

The first time Mikey Curtiss watched her son, Scott ride a bicycle, she cried tears of joy. Scott has Autism and there is nothing more this mom would love more than for her son, and other children with special needs to have the same experiences that other kids have, like riding a bike.

Scott who is 15 has never been able to ride a traditional two-wheeler because he has no center of balance. His parents took him to an adaptive bike event offered by Advocate Christ Medical Center to an outdoor adaptive bike day provided by Project Mobility. Scott finally found a bike that he could ride.

The Curtisses were touched beyond belief to learn of friends and family trying to help Scott win a bicycle. PLUS, Facebook friends and residents' efforts to help a boy they had never met to win a bicycle.

Scotty, a student in Shepard High School's Autism program, had even picked out a color for his adaptive bike - red. Sadly, he didn't win, he came pretty darn close.

After seeing the look of pure joy and freedom on her son's face as he test rode the bike at The Bike Rack in St. Charles, Mikey, decided that no matter what, her son was going to get his bike.

Help us help Scott Curtiss get his adaptive bike. Scott will be the first teen to get a bike from this campaign. His friend Anthony will be the next teen on the list, his story will be posted soon.

Campaign for Mobility
The Campaign for Mobility is fundraising to surprise 12 children with disabilities with adaptive bicycles this winter. Adaptive bicycles provide children with disabilities with the freedom of mobility, social inclusion, dignity and exercise.

Each bicycle costs $3,000-$4,000 and 100% of donations will go to surprising children with disabilities this winter. Please support these wonderful children by supporting Project Mobility's Holiday Campaign for Mobility!

The 12 children to receive adaptive bicycles this winter are selected through Project Mobility's working relationships with therapy centers, education specialists, physicians, and schools. Anyone who donates $500 can nominate a child to receive a bike and donations over $3,000 can hand-select a child to receive a bike through our campaign.

"Riding his bike up and down the street with friends or riding alongside of us while we walk our two dogs, together as a family, giving him the ability to be just like everyone else.This is what Project Mobility has done for Owen. Due to Owen's congenital heart defects and his hemi-paresis cerebral palsy Owen doesn't have the ability to ride a "normal" bike and he has a hard time keeping up with us on family walks. All of that changed when he received his adapted bike from Project Mobility. He has more confidence to do many of the things now he could not do before. Without the Project Mobility grant, as his parents, we would have never been able to afford a bike like this for Owen. The smile on his face when he rides his bike is PRICELESS! Thank you, Project Mobility. Thank you."
