Jean's Birthday Fundraiser for Philly Free School
Hi everyone! I'm Jean and, for my birthday this year, I would like to raise funds for an awesome school that I am part of:
Philly Free School
Philly Free School provides students ages 4-19 with the space to learn about the world and themselves at their own pace, while experiencing community through participation in a self-governing direct democracy.
Your donation supports our generous sliding scale tuition model which ensures that there isn't a financial barrier to enrolling in our school. As of today, over 60% of our students rely on scholarships from generous individuals like yourself.
I have spent almost a decade working with children in different capacities (as a substitute English teacher in a primary school in Singapore, a teaching artist, etc.) Philly Free School stands out in its commitment to youth rights and the holistic education of individual people. Joining the School in 2024 has changed how I think about schooling, the purpose and value of an education, and the abilities of young people. I am grateful to work in a place that nurtures compassionate, courageous, and wise young leaders of tomorrow.
This year, our students have engaged in a range of incredible learning experiences:
- Teens protested against the gentrification of Philly Chinatown and reported on it in our school newsletter.
- Some students have been tilling our garden plot, in the hopes of one day growing food for members of our community who are food-insecure.
- And, of course, the every day joys of inter-generational, mixed-aged learning: a 5-year-old playing chess with a 12-year-old, staff and students learning (or re-learning) algebra together, Philosophy Club discussions about AI, and more!
I know these are challenging times for many, if not all, of us. I am grateful for any amount you are willing to give to our school and its unique educational model. If you are not able to make a donation at this time, sharing this fundraiser with family and friends would also be a great help.
