Riley's Campaign for Pathfinders of San Diego Inc
With the devastating loss of Riley Farrell on February 9th, many friends and family have reached out and asked how they can support and show their love to the Farrell Family during this time. Riley's struggle with addiction ran far and long, and like so many others in our world, it was a battle that he lost at far too young an age.
Riley's battle was not lost easily. He tried. He fought. But he fell, time and time again. Too few resources exist to truly help those that suffer from addiction. Rehabilitation centers often cost thousands of dollars, and even then serve to treat the addiction immediately, without taking into account the day to day battle that addiction is outside of those walls. Even when down the rabbit hole, Riley fought to gain control of his addiction, often finding solace with Pathfinders of San Diego. It is estimated that 130 people die each day of opioid use in America and that roughly 10% of all Americans are in some stage of drug recovery.
Successful treatment for addiction typically requires continual evaluation and modification as appropriate, similar to the approach taken for other chronic diseases. Like many chronic diseases, relapse is also common in addiction treatment, with relapse rates between 40-60% (NIDA). This rate is largely affected by the lack of programs or supports for maintaining recovery, cost of recovery services, and supportive social networks which are often cited as being primary barriers to maintaining recovery.
As recovery is an ongoing process, sometimes, the initial treatment is not quite right, or the person starts by trying to quit without help, and over time, control is lost and the person relapses to drug use. However, this is not an indication that the person has failed, only that treatment needs to be adjusted. With motivation and experienced, certified help and resources, individuals suffering from chronic addiction can learn to interrupt the addiction cycle and move forward into the sustained abstinence that heralds recovery and results in a more positive future.
